Hello guys, just wanted to keep you updaged on the progress ive done on this black prince hatchet, i presume it is a hatchet because of the shape, weight and how it was previously hung on a short haft. The head is a True temper Black Prince made by Welland Vale I believe, it was in rough condition when purchased and it was painted GOLD, of all colors... Didnt knew Liberace liked axes!

The toe was very badly rounded and it took me a copious amount of elbow grease to get it back into shape, still find it a bit fat but since its an all purpose hatchet, i think it works fine.

Do you think these brown streaks are fungus spots or something? the wood looks sound and it pretty much behave normaly under the spokeshave, if a bit dry, which lead me to believe this is heartwood, with all the knots and funky stuff going on. Since its a short handle, i dont worry about it too much but the streaks intrigue me, any ideas?

So, do you think this is a hatchet or should i upgrade to a boy axe lenght?

Regards,
Remzy

Nice job on that hatchet head. I have not found a Black Prince stamped axes here. You have been rewarded for your hard work.

With most species of wood that streaking would be a warning sign, not so much with hickory. Just do a search for hickory flooring or cabinets. Knots cause that in hickory.

Thanks Garry, I sure got lucky these past few trips to the flea market, some times people over praise junk and sometime they sell you good stuff dirt cheap, go figures.

Forgot to add a clear picture of the stamp.

I think that looks like a really nice set-up Remzy. Would run that for sure.

Imagine at 2 1/2lbs, a boy's axe handle would probably handle pretty well.

Heres how it stand with the finished hanging, it is currently soaking tone of linseed oil, managed to get my hand on some untreated oil and it really soaks in compared to regular BLO.

Thanks SCT100!

Readily apparent that you used red oak for the wedge. On this forum it seems to be routine suggestion to use softwood wedges (ie poplar) but I'm with you and go for hardwood 'whatever's handy'.

Ive typicaly used leftovers of hickory for my wedges and it worked great but ive been using red oak lately as it drives in easier for me, dont ask me why, it has a tendency to split when driven in but it compress a little bit less, plus the color and grain difference with hickory is cool.

ive never used softwood wedges and never will, dont trust them, dont ask me why, i just dont.
