Hey guys, sorry I have not been active over here. I will try and post up some more.

I got my "shop" back up outside on the deck, and I immediately set to my first hafting of the year.

A TT head I got right before winter.

I used a 30" handle from househandle.

In the spirit of doing something different, I did my first stained handle. Like you see on older axe handles. I used water based stain. Just so I did not alter the handle feel. I am not one for paint.

Seemed to come out nice I think.

Oiled up. It should come out nice, once it has dried.

Good job on the axe. That really looks good. My eight year old son had to tell you again.

A thing of beauty for sure. I've used oil stains before to color hafts. Most are just BLO with pigments, and they feel just like regular BLO. Same care and maintenance. They don't tend to be as dark as what you've got going on with this one though.

Again, a beautiful hanging and sharpening job. Looks like you sharpen after you hang. That's my preference too.

I found it to be better for me. The handle gives me great purchase to keep the head nice and steady on the belt. Lets me do exactly what I want to without any issue.

That's nicely finished on all counts. A real looker...
I have a Norlund hb coming in I would like to give an old style finish on the handle like that.
Did you make the stain yourself or can you buy it from a hardware store in the paint dept?
I like the fact its water based.
Came out terrific!

The stain is nothing more than the same water based stain I use on leather. From Tandy no less.
