Picked this double bit up off of ebay for $20.

Took the angle grinder to it and cleaned it up. One side was more pitted than the other so it was easy to decide which would be the felling side and which the limbing one. Hand profiled with bastards.

I picked up a 36" handle from Ace (turner, day & Woolworth). I got it down to 33 and change after hanging.

Extending the kerf:

time to take the axe off again and trim the handle.

Finally ready:

Finished:

thanks for posting.
the Kelley Perfect is a fine axe. must have been very popular around here also because i've picked up several at farm sales. some with equal bevels, some are set up for grubbing and chopping on either bit

Thanks all.

Bear, that's why I jumped at this one. I like the western but not the michigan.

How did you get it looking so clean and contrasting in the last wedge picture? Not photography wise, but I'm assuming some oil/linseed and sanding?

Finally ready:

That's the way to wedge them. Shape the wedge to fill the eye.
I've started bevelling my wedges before I drive them to control the mushrooming. I'm so damn anal some times.

Thanks Peg. I feel like I'm still learning which is good. Saw your comment on the other forum on the finish. I guess I just like how I like 'em. I've never been one for just cleaning the edges. Personal preference.

Rasping, sanding and just a touch of linseed oil. I haven't finished the axe handle yet so I won't soak it until after it's done.
