I was at the flea market and found a true temper double bit and it was marked with a 7 is this a 7 lb axe? It was really heavy and big. I passed on it due to the one blade looking like someone went to town with the grinder and it looked mis shaped. Anyone know of any 7lb Kelly's? Was curios if this was something rare tht maybe I shouldn't have passed regardless. Any info would be great. Thanks.

I know TT made 7 lb Michigan pattern double bits. That was the max weight if I recall correctly.

Well the good thing about a 7 lb axe is the you could reprofile it considerably and still have a 6.5 lb axe. I'd go back and get that monster.

I would, too. The grinder probably didn't ruin very much of it. 7 pounds is a lot of steel to work with. Might make a helluva splitter.

Yeah it was pretty ground down on the one side. I'll go back on sun and see if I can get it rly cheap. If so I'll grab it just for the heck of it.

If my memory serves me correct it was on the face. Is there a significance of where it would be located? Any info would be cool.

I do believe the axe was marked true temper on one side and then Kelly works w the address on the obverse I can't remember which side the 7 was on but it was on one of the faces.

Yes. If is on the face, that might mean the weight, depending.

If it is under by the eye, that usually meant the individual forger or who made it.

Ahhh. It was definitely a heavy axe even though ground down a bit. The one side looked ok and the other ground down quite a bit.

I have never seen a double bit over 5 lbs. That however doesn't mean anything. A 7lber I have my doubts on, but thats just because I havent seen one, that I can remember. I hope it was a true 7lber. Thats awesome.

I'll do my best to bring it home w me this Sunday. If nothing else to post up n we can all have a look etc. I just hope he's reasonable on the price it's pretty beat up. It did have a 7 on it and there was no other weight marks on it that I could see.

I've never seen a DB over 4 lbs, but An Axe to Grind lists Michigan and Western patterns up to 7 pounds. That would be a beast of an axe. Twice the weight of a standard DB. Where do they put the extra weight? Is it larger overall dimensions, thicker cheeks? That's quite a bit more steel.

From what I could tell it was a lot of it in the eye to cheek area. I'm not positive but from I can remember anyhow. It sucks that it's so mis shaped from the find job on it. But I'm def going to try to pick it up this weekend.
