Got this one in the mail today. Nice to come home to some snow and an axe in the mail.

The head is in real good shape. Poll has not been hammered and the bit looks real good. I'm not sure what I'll do with this yet. I'd love to preserve some of the original paint and/or recreate the design (gold and red). The handle is cracked at the end. May replace it but other projects will come first.

Ooooooo...I like that one!!! I really like it. How heavy is that? How wide is the bit? Do you need my shipping address?? :D

Weighed the axe with handle and it came in at 4 lbs 3 oz and change. So maybe 3 1/2 pound head? Don't know.

It has a 5" bit and is 7" long from the bit to poll (measured in the center).

That's great and all, but you forgot the part about shipping it to me!

I guess came in the different patterns, which was common with Kelly....

If that is the axe I am thinking of, it was up for auction last week and it has the name "Buck" scratched into the handle. I don't know Buck, but I like his preference.

The stamp on the poll says it's a 3 pound head. :-) Nice score, I kind of wanted that one but had already surpassed my budget for the month...

I did notice that "3" on the poll today.

The only problem I see is the grind. It is very thin. Not sure what to do with it. Maybe just work with it and save it for light duties.

Decided to take the handle off and clean the head of rust and paint. I think I will try and repaint but I wanted to remove the underneath layer of surface rust. Any suggestions on type of paint are welcome. I'd like to recreate the gold and red design. I kept the photos of the original.

I've never painted an axe. But on other steel objects, the most important thing is the prep. Make sure it is totally clean of all oils especially. 409 works well for a cleaner. Primer will help it adhere, but if its not the same color, I'm not sure I'd use it. I like Krylon.

ETA: Very thin layers. Let them fully dry in between.
