I have had a few True Temper Tommy axes/hatchets. The one I recently got has the No. TAF stamped on the back of the head. The others I have had did not.
This new one has what I thought was a replacement handle and has a different shape than the others. The others have had the more traditional and original curved handle with rounded end and no markings on the back of the head.
After quite a bit of searching and research I have seen some trends and I believe I have figured out what the marking mean...
Seems there are at least 4 different variations of the TT Tommy Axe all with the same marking on the face.
1) A traditional curved handle model with plane unmarked back.
2) A straight handle model with Indian design decal on the handle unmarked back
3) A traditional curved handle model with No. TA on the back ( Tommy Axe )
4) A straight handle model with FIRE HARDENED stamped in the handle hence No. TAF ( Tommy Axe Fire Hardened)
I believe the No. TA and No. TAF may be earlier in the Tommy Axe time line but not really sure?
