Here are some pics of a tommy axe build I did. This head had a broken claw when I came across it. The idea behind the build was to de-claw it and reshape the poll. Lastly I hung it on a old handle that came from a flint edge boys axe. I am currently working on a sheath for it. Hope you guys enjoy.

Ps; yes I kept her nice and cool while taking the claws off and grinding. I really didn't want to soften the poll since these are hardened.

I really like it, especially the bit work. Also, I'm somewhat of a vise guy too, nice job on the Columbian.

I have a Tommy axe just like that in my pile, broken claw too. Hmmm....

Thanks for the kind words guys, I'm happy with how it came out and the old handle is incredibly comfortable.

Jb, the vice was my grandpa's and when he passed I inherited most of his tools. It was a little rusty when I got it. I'm happy I have it though. I remember using it when building stuff with him as a kid. Here are a couple right after I fixed it up.

Nice job on both, how's that axe feel with the long handle? The tommy axe does have some heft to it so I'll bet it's real nice combo

Thanks, the head definitely has enough weight to feel like it can still do some work on the longer handle. The overall length is about 25 inches. The combo of the two seem to fit well.

That came out nice, also reminds me of a plumb national. I'm a bit curious now about the weight of the head. I found listings claiming a 2 lbs head weight, but also an old TT advert showing a weight of 1lbs 6oz with a 14" handle. I wonder if these were offered in different sizes, or if the one with claws simply had additional mass added as well.

I put a 1.25 lbs True Temper Woodslasher on a 25" handle recently. It's definitely a nice length very usable with two hands but still rather compact. Even at two lbs over all I've found so far it can still get some work done. I set it up as a light relatively compact camp axe for trips were I can justify the weight. It won't be felling large trees but I much prefer it to a hand axe for splitting and chopping so far.

Similarly I rigged up a little 1lb 2oz National on a 20" handle and it's long enough to get some good work done but small enough to still handle most hatchet-y tasks. Good general head style for the application.

Ive got a Tommy Axe head with the claws. I believe it weighs apx 1 lb 12 oz.

Huh, so perhaps the claw version is just a half lbs heavier than its unclawed cousin. Thanks for the info, interesting for sure I was under the impression that these were more along the standard 1.25 - 1.5 lbs range.

nice work. those 4X36 table top belt grinders are handy.
was the bit mounted on the original handle?

Thanks guys, I didon't get a chance to weigh it before I hung it but I would estimate it is closer to a 1.5 lb head. As far as it looking like a national I have one that is on the original handle that's about 17inches and really liked the look of the poll. That is what I was going for. When I got the tommy axe it was on the original handle but in poor shape. This handle was saved from a different boys axe I came across.

I love my 4x36 it comes in handy for a ton of things.

Finished the sheath so I thought I would show a few size comparison. One is my modified council tool boys axe and the other is the council tool fss boys axe.
