okay... try #2 you pos....

Hey all, been lurking for a while, just now had a reason to join up and take part... I know theres some kelly works fans on here, and i figured you'd enjoy this... i found it in the "office" a week ago.. Im a surveyor, so i spend lots of time in the woods running down old fences and whatnot.. just so happened we were looking for a pin along a fence line on this job... taped away from the last corner we found to a spot along the fence and got the magnetic locator out to see if the next pin was in. immediately we got a monster ping, so i broke out the e-tool i carry and started digging for the pin. no pin, just this ol girl..
wasnt any handle left @ all in the eye, so it had laid there for long enough that the handle turned to dirt and about 2" of woods humus settled over top of it... here it is after vinegar and foil ball treatment..
i looked into it and found out about the military issue TTs being marked USA, and the regular ones not stamped like that. so im pumped... this thing has seen little to no sharpening.. the only use marks are slight poll flaring and some on the top of the eye maybe from where someone beat it back onto a handle once...
what length of handle goes on these things? and what shape? i want to put it back original style since it actually had one.
also, for you collectors out there, would it break your heart to see one of these blued, or is that acceptable?

the second pic was before the second vinegar scrub. its quite clean with only some pitting on that side.. figures the logo side was laying on the ground.

Get 'er back on the road and put 'er to work! I found an abandoned axe head along a fence row post a few years ago but it's way worse off for corrosion pitting than what you've got.

Good looking find! I like a 30-32" handle but others differ based on height, arm length etc.

Many of these axes were carried in Pioneer Racks on military vehicles like pictured. The rack also carried a shovel and pick axe. The pick axe was carried with the handle and the head separate.

The military specs for them was:

AXE: Single bit, 4 lb head weight, 4.750 inch cutting head, 31.00 inch handle length, Federal Spec GGG-A-926, type 1, class 1, design A.

i've not restored an axehead before.. when i scrubbed off the rust after the etch and saw the hamon i was shocked kind of, then i thought about it for a second.. neat critter..

thanks for the info 00..
im going to put it on ash and im going to blue the head.. probably use oxpho blue paste, depending on the results on the cleaver I'm restoring.. if its not good, then i will do something else.
