Ok I'm gonna admit it-I have a thing for the black bladed "forge finish" stuff from Napal :D this was from a deal of the day on the 18th.

Here it is on my hand for an idea of size.

It's 15 inches and 22oz so the spine thickness may startle you.

Let's get a closer look at the cho,it's different then what you may be used to.

Did a little chopping this morn, there's a small area that needs some attenion with a sharpener but it's the usual "HI sharp" which means watch yer fingers!

I like these forge finish knives from Napal,if you go there you aren't gonna see the shiney stuff but these real working blades hanging on people's belts, and you can carry and use them without worry of scuffing it up.

Very cool stuff from HI!

Thanks to Mrs.Yangdu and the Kamis

That's fantastic, i love the simple design of it, looks like it was made to work.

(This reminds me, I really should post some pics and a thank you for my YCS)

Nice pictures, thank you for sharing

I like the black forge-finished blades that turn up now and again too. I remember that one in particular--villager fit it may be, but I LOVE the lines of it, very graceful, the handle looks really comfortable too. And what a great sheath! Congrats on a great buy.

What's funny is that "finish" is the way it comes after forging and requires the least amount of work.

Reminds me of something I discovered by accident.

I had found that if I heat treated some 440C items I machined a certain way, they came out a very nice purple. So I had made some fixturing for use in the shop, ground it to size and polished it since the heat treat finish was to be the final finish, and heat treated it this certain way. They came out an almost iridescent purple because of the polishing.

Anyway, a customer came in wanting some parts and saw the tooling laying there and insisted he HAD to have his stuff with that finish. So I ended up selling a bunch of stuff to him and quite a few others in a finish that no one seemed to know how to replicate, and all the time it was an artifact of the heat treat process.

Have one forge finished Khuk and it does not work for me.

With the sunlight on it I can see a 'dusting' of rust over the entire blackened area.

The effect of the finish can be very striking and its good that its available to those to whom it appeals but I'll stick with full polish blades in the future.

That's because the forge "scale" is all that is protecting the metal from rust, and in the areas where it's thinnest, water can get in and rust forms.

That's really odd since my Panuti has been one of the more rust free blades I've had,I just wipe it dry after each use and go on my merry way.

Now the polished areas, like the edge and spine do get a bit spotty, but that's from the tree sap,a quick pass with some steel wool and it's good to go.

So...odd.

Now I just need a forge finish large Karda like the Kumar with a plain wood handle and black blade and I'll be

Ok went out and did some cutting-as you would expect it did very well:

This bigger branch/small tree took about fifteen wacks, probably a good three inches around:

This hefty branch took just two swipes to slice through:

So though it's thin it still cuts like you'd think a Khuk would a big  to the Kamis
