Anyone know who makes a truly smooth "sharpening" steel? No grooves, no grit, no nothing.

Juranitch's folding steel. A little odd, but it is smooth. I imagine he has more normal ones that are, too.

Check Lee Valley Tools for their burnishing rod. RC 65+. Works great. Cheap, too, with the Canadian peso. They mail order.

They are sold by www.leevalley.com look under wood working, scraping, burnishers.

I have the small solid carbide burnisher in wooden handle, it is excellent for steeling the edge.

Also available is a longer steel burnisher however, it is Rc 58-60.

Another source is Woodcraft Supply they have a HSS (high speed steel = M2) longer round burnisher. http://shop.woodcraft.com/

Here's a link to Juranitch's site. They have a portable smooth steel, and a desktop "Mousetrap" steel that sets your angle for you automatically. I have them both and they work well. I use the Mousetrap for kitchen knives, and can tell the difference after steeling.

HandAmerican has the absolute BEST smooth steels I have ever seen. They are reasonably priced, they're absolutely smooth, they work great, and their service is excellent!

Just go to www.handamerican.com and look at their "glass smooth steels"

They also sell great leather hones and various abrasive compounds to use for a great polished edge.

I have the Razor's Edge steel, as well as a few others. One advantage of the Juranich (Razor Edge) steel is that you can take the rods out of the handle and put them in the grooves of your sharpmaker stones. I learned that one from Sal Glesser himself on the forums!

I'm with AntDog. HandAmerican steels are very nice.
I've got the 21.5” OAL (actual rod length is 16.5”) steel. This is the larger of the two models that Hand American (I think still does??)offer. The steel itself is absolutely super “glass smooth”. Not one scratch present on the steel that I was sent.
It's hardened to Rc 62-65. It also comes with a 4-5 oz. leather sheath that snugly slips over the steel rod. Hand American suggests that this sheath be used for “finish polishing”. Very nice steel!!

RazorEdge's steel is another that I will get. So many people talk good about these steels.
They're especially nice because they fold up to such a small package.

Hey, why not try them both??;)

Geez, I just went to HandAmerican's site and was shocked to see all the different models they now offer. This wasn't the case a mere year or so ago.

They've now got grooved (and half grooved) steels as well as their usual "glass smooth" models.

Check 'em out. My HandAmerican steel was worth every penny.

I just ordered (and should receive tomorrow) one of HandAmerican's half grooved steels. They groove the half-groove model in a way that if you hold it one way, two opposing sides are glass smoothe, and if you turn it 1/4 turn in your hand, the opposing sides are grooved. I thought that was neat, because I figured it would be completely grooved on one side, and smoothe on the other. This will work great for the chefs or other poeple who steel their knives by stroking alternating sides of the steel in succession. Also, the make a high quality sheath to protect the steel out of their honing leather. They suggest you use the sheath as a final finishing hone after steeling the knife. How cool is that??
