I am about to place a bulk order of black para mili knives.
Because of the debate lately about how the hardness is effected by the coating, I decided to call Spyderco and ask them about it. Without getting into full detail, they have actually been running test's for the past couple of weeks to check the hardness of the blades, due to questions from some customers.
They tested both satin and DLC coated on their S30V Para models
The tests showed no significant difference in hardness and all measurements of both the black blades and satin blades fell between 59-61 HRC
They will continue this testing further. But as of right now. There is not a noticeable difference.
I am happy to hear this as I have always rocked a DLC para, including the original.
So those of you that like the durable coating, stop worrying about it and enjoy.
Hope this helps.

Thank you. That was the better guess, but it is nice to have it actually tested and confirmed.

All of this from one little post...thanks for checking, I'm sure Golden has been enjoying the calls recently.

Thanks for the info. As I expected, but wonderful to have confirmation!

Im not sure what you mean. Nothing was based off one single post. But all I can say is, THANK YOU for some KICK ASS customer service.

The question whether the DLC blades were as hard as the satin blades has come up several times here and in other forums. It was extremely responsive for Spyderco to test and share that info, and having it reported here is very helpful.

Like I said at first, without getting into detail. Think anything that has a thinner blade would probably fall to 59 HRC at the worst. But I honestly dont care at this point. I would carry the knife regardless. If anything further comes up, we can let the pros at Spyderco talk about it if they need to.

Another question: Is this just true of the DLC para 2's?

I'm not saying I won't carry an S30V knife at a lower hardness. I'm just curious because I want to know if my "feel" on the stones is accurate. Oh, and I've read here that S30V at 58 holds it's edge as well as AUS-8. So for me, it's just info and trivia.

I dont think so bub..

Although you seem to be a fan. I could honestly care less for some of the tests done by a few in that gang. Im going by what the company directly told me and my own personal experience with the knife on hand. I would appreciate it if you would not post any of their reviews here. JMO. That stuff is already polluting other forums. If anything negative does come up, im sure Spyderco will let us know about it.

If you wish to open a new thread for personal testing and such then do so. Im gonna lock this one. Its more or less just an update.
Matt

That's what I see here. I kinda trust Ankerson and the rest of the guys doing this testing. But that's just me.

Yup, fan here, but that doesn't preclude having an open mind or a defensive attitude. Lock it then.

I thought this was a discussion board....

Well IMO asking the company may give you the answer you want to hear but that does not mean its 100% true. Spyderco seems to be a very open company but I doubt they would release any negative information.

I have one of each style of blade and with my experience with them I'd say the HT between the two is different. I've had S30V from several makers and its a steel I have used for years now. Like singularity35 I too can feel a heat treat through sharpening, its not a magical power but a learned skill that comes with paying enough attention.

The test were not done to dull. In the very same thread I asked about the difference that composition of the steel would make, Ankerson and others informed me that though a steel might lose its shaving sharpness at a certain level due to the composition of the steel it will still hold a reasonable edge longer. Therefore S30V will still have a much more reasonable edge then AUS8A due to its composition at HRC of 58.

Composition of a steel alloy plays a very important role.

Thanks for this thread. I doubted that the HRC would have been different.
