As I was touching up the edge on a knife in the kitchen I spotted some rubber bands on the counter and remembered something I tried a long time ago. Try this……

Hold a very sharp knife vertically with the edge facing you. Put a fairly heavy rubber band over the blade and stretch it as far as it will go without breaking it. Release it so that it will hit the edge. If the blade is shaving sharp, the rubber band will be cut all the way through. Now take a closer look at the band and you will see a bunch of other cuts. Sometimes, the band will be cut into several pieces. I have had a band cut into 3 pieces with 4 to 6 smaller cuts. I have the best results with those rubber bands that are used to hold bunches of broccoli together.

I don’t remember where I first saw this. It may have been in a science magazine.

Let me know what kind of results you get.

By the way, I should mention that it is probably not a good idea to try this with a slip joint folder. ;)

you know some idiot is going to get a mega rubber band and stretch it till the knife flies into his left idiot eyeball, and then whine about suing some one!

I will have to try this..........now to find a mega rubber band...... and who needs safety glasses.

I forgot to warn you. Don't try this at home. You'll poke your eye out. Do it at your buddy's home.:D

In the early days of Bladeforums we had a frenzy of experimenting with rubber bands -- but don't go looking for it in the archives, try it! It's fun! It's educational! It's challenging! :)

Let go of the rubber band, not the knife.

Sorry, but you can't always assume that people get it.

I do not endorse this procedure. Broccoli rubber bands are too valuable to be used for childish entertainment.

For those in the Darwin competition, try it with a razor blade instead of a knife.

Well, has anyone tried this? How many sutures did it take to close the wound? How did you explain it to the ER doctor?
