I watched a video by ex special forces/survival guru  Dave Canterbury last week, he made a tinder nest using Duct tape as a source of survival tinder for winter conditions, figured I'd try it out.

For once the rain had stopped and it had become a perfect fall morning !

I love days like this !

Anyway the trick to using Duct tape as tinder ( if lighting with a ferro-rod )is to make the strips as fine as possible, I used my knife to start the strips.

Not sure just how many strikes it took me to light it but it was far more than I'd wanted it to. I'm thinking maybe this would work better with some shredded cotton balls on the back before you wrap it round your bottle or knife sheath etc. That way when you pull it off and shred it up the cotton strands will take a light quickly and ignite the Duct tape.....just a thought.

What can you buy with $15 nowdays ? Well I managed to get myself this new army jacket at the weekend. Brand new for the price of a burger and a beer, I figured it was too good a deal to pass up.

Cool trick for the fire.

It looks like your ducktape was a little to bunched up. Maybe if you opened it up a little, and made finer pieces it would have gone up quicker.

Great jacket by the way:thumbup:

Yeah you are probably right, the finer and more loose the nest the better it will take a spark. It's just that there are at least 3 natural tinders that I'd choose during winter over here that I'd rate over the Duct tape.

Great fall pics. You got a great deal on that jacket. Neat I dea for some duck tape.
Another option to file away in the old brain lol.

Jacket looks Canadian. The duct tape thing well if it works it works. Fritos make a nice tinder too. :)

Pit,that's a good idea with the cotton (or any other fine fiber tinder) stuck to the glue side. Maybe you don't even need to shred it at all, then the tape acts as its own moisture barrier plus keeps the fibers in place if it's windy. Just a thought.

Seems like an idea I need to try out....adding cotton does sound like a good idea
