Trying my hand at folders

Here's a folder I just finished. Until now I've only "practiced" making them. I've made a half dozen proto's along with a couple Bali's prior to this one. Fine tuning techniques and mechanisms has been my primary goal until now. The frame and blade on this one were designed by Marcus Lin, the bolster and scale configuration was done by me. I've worked on quite a few different knife projects with Marcus  and look forward to more in the future. IMHO, he's a genious when it comes to knife design. The guy is not only an extremely good designer but also an acomplished knifemaker in his own right. Awesome even !! You might know him from the forums as Flatgrinder. I can't say enough good things about him !!
I also want to let you know that I was just licensed to use IKBS in future folders I make, and will be unveiling and adding a new Lin designed Tactical Style Folder to my line-up in the next month or so. Thanks goes out to Flavio Ikoma and Rick Lala for being so gracious in sharing the IKBS technology with the knifemaking community. Thanks also to Duane Weikum for giving me the go-ahead, after inspecting a Bali I made using IKBS.

Here's the folder I made, along with the specs  I hope you guys like her ;) ............................

  • Blade Steel, Bolsters, Back Bar, Thumb Stud & Bail - Chad Nichols Ladder Pattern Stainless Steel Damascus
  • Liners - 6AL4V Titanium
  • Scales - Elephant Ivory
  • Pivot - Staked 3/16" 416 S.S.
  • Open length - 5-5/8"
  • Blade length - 2-1/2"
  • Closed length - 3-1/8"
  • Finished with a small black sharkskin lanyard and a tiny ivory bead

Wonderful first folder. Is that our preban ivory?
It sounds like you have a serious case of folder fever. Looking forward to seeing how you progress.

That knife looks amazing. I'm no knife expert but you did an awesome job on that knife. The damascus grain design on the blade looks really good, first thing that caught my eye.

VERY nice looking knife made from some sweet looking damascus and looks like ivory scales.

Well done.

Peter

This knife looks to have excellent proportions, but I would like to see a photo showing the whole opened knife if possible. The materials work together really well. The shape is pleasing. Overall, it appears to be extremely fine knife.

Chad Nichols Damascus is absolutely Beautiful !!
It works great too ! He does an outstanding job of annealing after the forging.
Really, some of the prettiest Stainless Damascus I've had the opportunity to use so far !

Here you go Keith. The best (straight over the top) pic I have is flubbed up by my shadow :grumpy:
Here it is nonetheless, along with a couple others

And Thanks for the compliment

I wish you were going to still have it in Atlanta, I wanted to play with it.

I always figured you'd be a natural making folders, being a veteran mold maker and badass machinist. All the forging kind of took me by surprise.

Thank you guys ;)

Nathan, I've been working on developing my forging skills since the day I began making knives :D I absolutely love it
Being able to stretch my knife design imagination beyond the limits a piece of barstock presents is nothing short of amazing to me

:D

Now you've done it! Once you've made a folder, you won't be able to stop. You are doomed to a lifetime of folder making.

My first folder didn't look nearly that good. Excellent job!
