Trying Out My New M9

When I heard about the coated versions of the M9 out at Blade West, I knew I wanted one. Thanks to a few helpful Rats, I got one today. This is a nice knife. On my scale it weighs 22 oz, which is about as heavy as I want a knife to be. It is still light enough and fast enough in the hand to slash standing grasses with ease. And this was after chopping through a 5" log. It isn't quite as nimble in the hand as the LE, but with its high saber grind and a little more weight, it chops even better.

I prefer this knife to many of my choppers. The handle is comfortable when chopping. It isn't too heavy to carry like some knives. I think I like it as well as the LE.

Oh, and I did all this and more with the factory edge. Nice job SRKW!

Thanks Vic. I really want to get one of these! I love my LE (especially since it's so freakin sharp ;)) but this version looks really nice too.
I hope Eric makes these a regular release.

Great blade. Man, Swamp Rat has been kicking out some great blades lately!

Looks like your kind of knife Horn Dog!

Definitely my kind of bowie, rpn. I like them well balanced and fast. Like its brother, the M9LE, the CG is one of the best handling of all the Busse-made bowies I have used.

Nice blade:eek:...I want one. Thanks for the review and pics.

Vic, how do the M9s compare to your NMSFNO. If I remember from your review of that knife it beat out all comers but your 10" and above blades. Is that still the case?

At the price these were new, I believe it to be the best value in a large knife. The CG as well as the beautiful LE.

With factory edges, my M9LE actually outchopped my NMSFNO. With the new convex edge I put on the NMSFNO, the competition is a lot more stiff, but I haven't really compared them side by side since.

The NMSFNO is a HECK of a chopper for its length, though - it's got a lot of weight out near the tip. About the only way you'll get more chopper for the length is to buy a small kukri, IMO.

The dogfather is just a beast. It outchops the M9 LE easily, as I'm sure it would the CG. The downside with with the dogfather is that it is so heavy that you quickly tire using it. I happen to like the quickness in hand of the M9 and like it a good deal better than my dogfather.

All my Red Bay trees are dying. So today it was chainsaw, axe, golok, and M9 out back. Just for fun I did some serious baton work splitting some of the wood with my M9. The sheath was a homemade one from my buddy Tom (Private Kink) over on Scrap Yard forum. It works great.

Now it looks like a user should look. The axe was a bit easier, though. :D
