Not really sure if this belongs here, but I've been trying scrimshaw. I'm going to start doing it on a few knives so I thought I would show it. This is the 8th piece ive done, a humpback whale. Let me know what you think.

I think it is freakin awesome.
I have tried to do scrimshaw but only once and either I need to read up on in some more, or I just naturally suck at it.
I can draw pretty good but I didn't like the results of what I got trying scrimshaw. It is hard work but the results if done right are awesome

you are damn good. I would be proud as hell to have somethin like that on a knife, or anything.

Very nice! Much better than many I've seen done on actual knives.

My only suggestion is that you find a way to make the outside edges crisper. It may just be the photo, but it looks like the edges bled a little on you. They look a bit fuzzy on my computer. It looks good on the tail, making it fade out, but it is distracting around the front of the head. IMHO.

Hey, Ryan. I was wondering what you've been up to lately. Great work! You are a talented feller for sure!

I got to see this piece up close at the Oklahoma show. Great work!! All those little dots. Beautiful Ryan.

That's impresive Ryan. The whale looks like a real one and also looks like it's in motion. I like that !!!! Frank

Ryan, I'm impressed. You may be a natural at this. Please do keep it up and see where it goes, could be very far.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'm just glad ya'll knew it was a whale and not a b52 airplane lol. I just started, but I'm really enjoying scrimshaw.

Chris you hit the problem I fought the entire time. I never was happy with anything I tried around the edges. I don't think so much that the ink bled, I think I made my holes were too deep and didn't get them close enough together. At least that's my thoughts. You can see I tried a couple of different methods around the edges for that reason.

jealous as hell,:grumpy: I have a hard time drawing a knife pattern. Great work!

Looks like your an artist trying out scrimshaw, not a knife maker trying it for the first time. Very nice.

I have to agree with Borg. You did a great job with the shading and perspective on the whale. Not something you would see unless someone had a background as an artist. You really show talent at the scrimshaw. I hope you will keep it up and post more photos.
