Trying to decide on which Emerson?

Howdy,
I am planning on ordering a new Emerson in a few weeks and I could use some advice. I want the knife for mostly self defense use. I am looking at wave models and trying to pick from these models. The Super CQC7, Commander Karambit and the Combat Karambit. I kind of like the idea of the Super 7 being able to use the rapid deployment sheath or just used in a pocket. One question that I had on the Combat Karambit is the technique used in sharpening the curved blade. I can see where either of the other blades would be much easier to sharpen. I have not seen any of the Emerson's in any stores so I will be purchasing one sight unseen.

Any advice or opinions would be really appreciated,
Mike

I am in the same boat. Looking to buy an Emerson sight unseen as well. I am looking at the Mini-Commander, SOCFK, & CQC-7. I've also looked at the Karambits as well. My big concern is whether or not I want the Tanto-style blade or not. Never had one, but think they look good and are probably very useful. I'll be glad to see what folks here have to say. Also curious what reputable dealers you guys buy from online?

Adios
Matt

of the ones you mention, for sd i think the combat kerambit is ideal. quick to deploy, solid grip w/ either hand, easy to conceal. (i assume you are abiding by all your local and state laws).

as far as sharpening, ive found a chef steel to be the easiest to use given the blade shape. but you shouldn't need to sharpen it unless you also plan on using it for utility purposes, for which it is not an ideal design.

I would choose the Super 7 over the karambit because you can't really do anything other than slash with it. What if you needed to be able to punch through a car door (or something to that affect). The mini commander is one of the most comfortable knives I have ever held.

Emersons---- they all work. Try to handle some, if you can. If you can't, think application. BOING !BOING !BOING!

I have owned a bunch of different knives and a bunch of different Emersons, and for an SD knife the one I recommend the most is the Combat Karambit!!!

I put off buying one for years. I got the Bullnose first, figuring that the curved blade was just some kind of "gimmick". With the Bullnose, I fell in love with the handle and outstanding ergonomics, so I gave the curved blade a try and wow....this is one wicked and extremely versitile weapon!!! If you think it is only for "slashing", it's because you haven't trained with one....believe me, I thought the same thing at one time!!!

The waved draw is as fast as any automatic, switchblade, or fixed blade. With your finger in the hole, no way are you going to drop this and no way is anybody ever going to disarm you!!!

Watch the demo and read some atricles: http://www.emersonknives.com/VideoDemosArticles.htm

I also highly recommend Emerson's training video: http://www.emersonknives.com/DVDPreview.html

The Karambit is an unconventional SD knife and nothing else! If you need a knife for routine daily cutting chores, carry the Karmabit on your strong side and just carry something else of conventional design on the off-side. (I often carry a multi tool, CQC-7, or Benchmade AFCK on the off-side....for those kinds of chores.)

Thanks for the responses, I will see if I can get my hands on one some where around here. Also thanks for the sharpening tip on the combat, I might just give it a try, I can always pick up the other one before Spring. It will only be needed for slicing & dicing anyways.

What about the persian?I don't hear much talk about them I think they
are the best sd model emerson has.But not good for utility uses.:D:D:thumbup::)

I've owned about every model of EKI save for the frame locks. I'll tell ya this much, every EKI seems to have an excellant grasp of handle ergo's. More so than most knives I have used or carried. My current favorite is the 14. The damn thing cuts way bigger than the blade would indicate its size is and the handle ergo's for me are the best. If you can try different models out please do so. If you can't the Commanders are good, the 8, 11, and 14 and you can't forget the 7 series in all flavors! keepem sharp

imho the very best production EKI's are the CQC12 and '13 the '12 due to the grind and the frame lock and the '13 due to the grind and handle design, i would prefer either to a super '7 or k'bit myself, of the 2 ya mention i would go with the super '7 by far i dont like k'bits and like the non std blade k'bits even less.

Id go for an HD-7 or a 12 for SD, the Persian is a good choice as well but it is a big knife, the handle is so long it nearly goes to the bottom of my pocket although it is thin enough to ride fairly well i still dont carry it as much as i might like. Kerambits are also a good choice and do their job very well but i look to have the option of using the knife closed as an impact weapon. The kerambit is not as well suted for this as the Persian, HD-7 or 12 as its rather wide when closed and does not fit the hand well untill the blade is deployed. I like to have lots of options when it comes to this sort of thing so its just my personal preferance but a valid point non the less !!! training and tactics are what really count not so much the knife you use. I feel/hope its more likely you will need to "deflect" an attack with non lethal force than actually go butcher on someone.

+1 on the mini-commander. It's my first "real" knife, and if this knife is ANY indication of what real knives are, it certainly won't be my last. I can't see liking another knife better at this point in time. Mine is the BTS

You will kick yourself if you don't purchase a CQC-8. It is probably one of the most (if not the most) popular blade style put out by Emerson.

The Persian is awesome but is very large and is really meant to be a stabber. Still a "must own" Emerson.

The combat karambit or satin finished original style karambit is also a great one to have.

If I were going to buy a tanto style Emerson I would try out the newer CQC-15 model. Good deals can be found on ebay right now.

In the end all Emerson are great and buying them can become an addiction.

If I had to choose my favorite it would be the CQC-8. If I could only have one then I might go with the CQC-12 simply because it is a framelock version.

If there is ever a framelock CQC-8 then that would be my favorite one to own and use.

Also, they will be unveiling the new "Horseman" at this years Shot Show. It is a mini CQC-8. There is also a mini version of the CQC-13 being unveiled as well.

Can't go wrong with a Commander model. My first emerson and certainly not my last.

Get the ONE that started it all---CQC-7. But the HD-7 is the "evolved" (7). That's the one.

YES. Indeed the 8 is a classic and MUST be considered. I also vote for the 11 and 13. I think the 15 is another winner but do not own this one personally. Don't do k-bits myself so can't comment on that but personally I think a proper knife will be more versatile in the long run. Be advised the V-ground knives are easier, in my experience, to sharpen than the chisel grinds.
