im trying to decide between two particular patterns.... Whittler or Congress? the whittler has more of a working look to it while the congress seems to have more of a dressy/fancy look. i can only afford to get one (of decent quality anyway) im just really a bit tossed on it. so i'd just like to know your opinions on the two patterns. pros? cons? etc

Thanks,
Scott

There's a wide variety in both those patterns, but in general the whittler usually has more blade shapes on a single knife. For that reason, in general, I prefer whittlers.

oh yes, well i suppose for more reference the particular ones i am currently eyeing are the Boker tree brand carver's congress whittler and the Boker tree brand beer barrel whittler (also the Boker tree brand beer barrel congress but mainly those 2)

You can try the Boker Congress Carver/whittler best of both worlds, 4 different blades, moderately priced.

If you can find congress with 4 different blade shapes than go for it, otherwise take a whittler, I'd prefer one with split spring and not 3 springs (what I truly prefer is T.Bose lockback whittler .....)

I dunno... I have a Schatt and Morgan 4" split spring whittler, and it is one of the most well put together knives I own, and for whittling and even as an EDC, it is a great knife. Not being a congress pattern but shaped as a whittler, it is easy to grab and manipulate the blades as a heavier whittling knife.

But I had never seen an "whittler congress". I Googled the "Boker whittler congress" and up came some pics of an great looking whittler. Personally, I hadn't seen one with such distinctly different blades on one knife.

I think if I was going to be whittling with the knife, I would go with the Boker congress pattern. And at 3 3/4", it would drop right in your pocket. With the rosewood scales I found it in, that would just top it off to make that my choice.

Here's the Boker

yeah that is the congress i am eyeing.

i think that one of the main things that i am wondering is if a congress pattern along those lines would be comfortable to hold and use... if it is then no doubt i'd take it as it is a bit more aesthetically appealing to me (the whittlers are a close second) but then it looks like it might feel a bit odd in the hand.

Well if it works for him.....

Len Yule and his dad are the only father/son team to win the National Wild Turkey Call Championship. While his dad dominates the collectible duck call market, Len has earned his reputation with turkey calls, where his calls fetch from $1000-$4,000 each.

Len is an avid user of Böker pocketknives, primarily because the blades are made of carbon steel. His only problem was that, because of the blade configurations, he was forced to use different knife patterns. Under Len's guidance, Böker incorporated 4 different blades into the popular Congress pattern which they are now producing for the wood carver.

And being that it measure 3 3/4" closed it nestles quite nice against the thumb to the palm..........

That's cool. Thanks for that.

Well it's funny, that knife has been on my wish list for a while, I keep forgetting about it, but you fellas have reminded me so....... next time my wife ask I think I know what I'll be getting.
Also with Boker if you can shop around I find vendor pricing with Boker to be all over the place with a big price range spread. If you get tell us how you like it, I have a couple of Bokers and I really like them I used a Boker 7474 yellow bone stockman at work for many years and has held up nicely.

This appears to be quoted from AG Russell's online catalog verbatim.

yea, the cheapest i found it was on knifecenter for a little over 50. i dont think im going to find it cheaper though... without a sale anyway. and i definitely will let you know how it works out.

I think I prefer the whittler pattern over the congress. I just have never been able to really warm up to the congress. That's not to say you should get a whittler over a congress; it's just what I would do personally. I have 4 congress pattern knives in my accumulation, but I never seem to carry any of them.

Just to add more confus...ehm...variety of opinions
I don't have either knife. But...
I know that, as for blade combination, a whittler would probably be better. Congress knives are usually redundant, something which I never liked...although the Boker pictured above has four different blades, and that would be an exception to the rule.
Yet, I always found the shape of the Congress frame very attractive, while I can't say the same thing about any whittler I've seen so far. So my vote goes for the Congress. Oh, and for the Congress Jack for the 2013 forum knife :D
