Trying to find a 3 or 4 bladed knife to try.

Most of my knives are single blades, but now I want to try one with 3 or 4 blades. It'll be be used for lots of different stuff, but I think it could be particularly useful when whittling and carving wood. I'm fond of carbon steel, but it can also be stainless.

I'm open to most blade shapes. Wharncliffe, sheepsfoot, spear, spey, clip or drop point.

I want to try something else than GEC this time, mostly because I'm on a budget now. I wont be picky on the cover material, but I prefer wood and bone.

Perhaps something like this, maybe with a 4th blade.

Can you help me find a reasonably cheap knife for me to try based on this information?

The Case Large Stockman is the same size and blade configuration as the 81 above and can be had in the $40.00 - $50.00 range.

I saw a Columbia River Congress pattern for under $40.00 the other day. Don't recall what site but it looked decent.

I'll check out your suggestions. I'm also looking at Rough rider and Schrade knives.

Buck 301 and there's a wood version also (not sure of number). I *think* you can find them for about 25-35$. I still carry mine over some much more expensive knives sometimes.

A couple suggestions...
You could hunt for an old US made Schrade OT stockman.
Or go for a Solingen made Boker stockman or congress.

Canal street makes a pretty sweet stockman and the buck collector club just put out a 301 stockman in BG-42 that is still available at the moment.

This was going to be my advice. :) I've personally had better luck with Solingen made Bokers than Case but you'll find mixed reviews on any brand. Boker also has the line that are assembled in Germany with Chinese made parts for a very reasonable price & most the reviews I've read on them have all been very positive.

Maybe go Rough Rider and try out a stockman and a congress. Though Boker also has made-in-Chinas. Wait to get an expensive one till you know what you like.

The Case 6347 pattern stockman is 3 7/8" closed, standard 3-blade, usually found in stainless in the bone handle but the 3347 is yellow delrin and in CV...maybe some other options currently that I'm not aware of. Stepping up in size, Case makes several options in steel and handle material in their larger stockman, sized 4 1/4". I think you can find a model to suit your budget and needs here.

Optionally, Queen's 4" stockman in either amber carved stag bone or curly zebrawood and D2 steel is a beauty of a knife. Going up in size, their 4 1/4" cattle knife is available with same handle materials and steel. Costs a little more than the Case models. Also the Boker 4" stockman patterns are good carbon steel and wood or bone. Again, costs a little more than the Case knives. Of course, everyone makes the stockman pattern so there's a wide choice of readily available knives here.

If you want to try a congress 4-blade pattern, the nicest I've seen are the 4" Queen large congress models in carved stag bone or curly zebrawood and D2 steel and the smaller Boker congress patterns. I think the Bokers are around 3 5/8"--maybe 3 7/8", depending on model--and very nice pocket knives. I think the Bokers cost less than the Queens but the prices on both brands vary tremendously online.

You can also find some other patterns with three to four (or more) blades. The sowbelly comes to mind right off hand.

Personally, I would recommend you start with a yellow delrin Case stockman knife in CV steel in whatever size appeals to you. It will not cost a lot, yellow delrin is a traditional material in slipjoints and Case knives usually are very good to excellent knives within their price ranges. QC can sometimes be spotty so be sure you either hand pick it locally or order with return options.

I think I might land on a stockman pattern. I like that the congress pattern has 4 blades, but not when at least two are the same. I don't need two blades that are exactly the same shape and size.

I am not a Case fan, but for a good new three blade knife I suggest a Medium Case Stockman with punch. Long California clip, sheepsfoot and punch- a thin slicey blade, a wide straight edge and a tool for everything not cutting related- what more would one want?!?

If you're open to vintage stuff, I suggest you search out an old Shrade 34OT. They're well built, have good steel, and are practically indestructable.

I also would suggest taking a look at the Boker knives. I've had a few over the years and have always been pleased with them in the area of fit, finish, ease of sharpening, and overall performance as an EDC. Buck stockmans should also be considered; heck of a knife for the price you pay. However, they have stainless blades and I personally prefer carbon. My father just loves his Buck 301 that his granddaughters gave him seven years ago to replace his worn out Schrade 80t. Good luck on your quest. Matt

Thank you for all your suggestions.

I ordered a cheap 3 7/8" Rough Rider stockman to try the pattern before investing in something more expensive. If I like it I might upgrade to a Buck, German Boker or Case. A Boker congress is also interesting, especially those with a spey and sheepfoot instead of two sheepfoot blades.

I do want to try a Schrade 34OT, and my only options of getting one used is either trough BF or Ebay.

I'm not familiar with Schrade knives, but did the company go under some time ago? Did someone revive it with lesser quality? I found a knife on Ebay with the text "NEW SCHRADE KNIVES 34OT..."

The original Schrade went bankrupt several years back. The rights to the trademarks were bought by Taylor Brands LLC. That company has knives under the Schrade trademarks made in China.

The original Schrade knives are held in high regard these days. The new ones, not so much. The original Schrade knives were working knives, not so pretty and dolled up like some of the competition. They were just practical, everyday knives that sold at good prices. The current Schrade knives are not really that bad, considering the selling prices and the fact that they are still built as working knives--not very pretty but made decently well of good acceptable materials.

I only own one older Schrade--a large Uncle Henry liner lock--that I bought before the company went bust. As a kid, Old Timer knives were everywhere and pretty cheap so I probably owned a few that I either lost or let rust away due to neglect. I was a standard issue irresponsible kid. I do own a few of the current Schrade Old Timers. They're certainly not the best but they're really pretty good and all of them were around $14-20. Fine for a knife that will be beaten up over time.

Take a look at the puma stockman .IMO its a good quality knife at a low price . this is mine with stag scales

This, if you are looking for a bigger knife. The Case 6375 (Large Stockman) is really a great pocket knife.

A good ole USA Schrade 8OT is a great option too.

Back when this thread was active Andi contacted me and said he had something for me.

He sent me these two. A Rough Rider congress and a small Schrade stockman.

The RR had two sheepfoot blades, and I ground one into a wharncliffe. The blades are very thin and I'll use it when I'm working with leather. The orange color on it really pops! It almost look fluorescent.

Although the scales on the Schrade are syntetic I like them. Maybe I'll make some new clothes for it with moose antlers or wood sometime.

After having these knives for a while I've learned that I like 3 bladed knives better than 4 bladed knives. This might not have to do with the number of blades, but the patterns. Perhaps a 4 bladed stockman would suit me well. I know I like the stockman pattern now, and I did get myself a RR stockman.

Thank you again Andi for giving me these knives to see what I like. I wont forget it, and one day I'll ask for you address to give you something. I'm not sure you got the PM I sent you back when I received the knives, since I didn't hear anything back.
