so im brand new to collecting knives and was wondering what you guys think i should get next. ive always liked knifes but this is the first time ive had a job thats able to support and expensive collection like this. currently i have a benchmade 941 plain edge in green, and a benchmade 710 plain with a d2 blade. i love the 940 but the 710's steel was a pain to use. i was looking at the cold steel hatamoto, a mcusta tac elite black with damascus steel and some knifes by Laramie Knifeworks. has anyone heard of him or have any other suggestions/ reviews. thanks

CS IMO is a waste of money, great marketing but not so great products. The mcusta's from what i've heard are good but its not a full damascus blade, it has a VG-10 core. Don't know the last maker but I would suggest looking at kershaw and spyderco.

Good choices.

Im of the opinion that some of their products are a great value and their marketing sucks :)

The Damascus Mcusta's with VG-10 cores are actually better performers than full Damascus in my experience.

Kershaw is the best value in the business. It's true from small to large, inexpensive to top end.

It's a different approach to the damascus concept, it's rather a laminated kind of blade. But it looks great, and it works very well with it's vg10 core. These tactility series by Mcusta are seriously good.

Firstly, welcome to BladeForums - home of a bunch of nice knife-nuts!

I am biased - my knives-de-jour are Benchmades... this week. I like the 710 D2 you have - great EDC. I like my 760BK LTi even better never thought I'd say that about a Tanto blade - even a Bob Lum 'Americanized' variant - a bunch more bucks, of course. The older, and canned, 420 Resistor and 425 Gravitator I recently bought are quite nice. The 425 has the Wharncliffe straight edge, while it's 426 sibling is more traditional. Canned recently, the biggie 610 Rukus and it's normal sized 615 mini-Rukus are extremely useful. Check Benchmade's site - under 'Products', look for 'Classic Knives' - they are the canned ones.

Okay, maybe you need a change - the Kershaw 1725CB Junkyard Dog II with a composite blade and edged with CPM-D2 makes it a real user - with toothy G10 scales, too. If you shop at Wally World, they have the Kershaw OD1, Zing!, and Skyline for <$40 - bargains. While you are there, check out the $27 basic Buck 110 Folding Hunter - an American classic. If you really like it, consider a visit to Buck Knives site for their 'Custom Shop' - and have them build you a super custom made 110 - mine are keepers. Everything I've mentioned is US-made, too.

Let us know if you like fixed blades - we can help you spend even more moola!

I'll second Kershaw and Spyderco :D Don't own any Kershaws, but I've seen and felt them.

It's only buying the Spyderco Military that led to me not owning one.

And I have no regrets. :D

Thanks for all the great ideas guys but rethinking what i actually need and im leaning more towards a gentlemen's folder. i currently work at a house as a estate manager and there are two little boys there. i dont know how the parents will react to a spyderco. dont get me wrong great looking knives but they can be a little intimidating. Ill even go custom. any ideas?

The Hatamoto is a fantastic knife, strong as a tank and very high quality.
