I ended up choosing the Kizer Tigon Ki4450Ti2. After having it for a while it has grown on me. While I do still a few ergonomic gripes overall I enjoy it for what it is at the price I paid(less than $100). I have an image of disassembly and a few comments below and also HERE.

Hello all,

This is my first post here, although I do come here often enough for information on knives and swords, and I was wondering if those of you with a more extensive folding knife knowledge to help me finding a knife that would fit my wants/needs.

I currently use a Spyderco Tenacious for EDC and while its a great knife I am now looking for something a little different. I really like the curvature of the blade on the Tenacious for slicing and enjoy how the blade rests in the fingers for more precision control, but the limits of its blade design as well as its steel are somewhat bothering me as of late.

While the fine tip on the blade is a good aspect for precision work its also relatively weak and the steel(8cr13mov) is easy work with, but also requires honing more than I would like if I use it heavily during the day. I was looking around one day on the interwebs and I stumbled accross the CKRT Mah Eraser. On the ergonomics and blade shape front this knife looked like it fit what I wanted overall.

Ergonomically it seems like it rests well in your fingers in a more fencing grip which I prefer, the blade has some height between the blade plane and the where you rest your fingers(similar to kitchen knives,) and also the blade is a reverse tanto with a strong tip for piercing but enough of a curvature for slicing. It also features a somewhat larger blade, multiple belt clip placements, and a flipper assist. The downsides however are The LAWKS system(which I could remove), the blade steel isnt far off of 8cr13mov so it still may require frequent honing depending on blade angle, and last but not least I am late to the party and I can not find a plain edge version for less than $100 and I do not care for combo edges on blades shorter than 5". I also have a leatherman surge I carry from time to time if I really need full serration.

Are there any suggestions that could be made to point me to a knife similar to the Mah Eraser potentially with a tougher steel? Or should I bite the bullet and pay 2x what the combo edge is going for now for the overall ergonomics I desire but still be in a similar boat with steel toughness? Weight isnt an issue and cost can be up to ~$150 for quality.

Thanks for any input.

EDIT:

I will add just to help clarify that im looking for a knife in the ~3.3-4" range, sheepsfoot or reverse tanto(with curvature) geometry perferably, and preferably in satin/stone washed since I will use it for food from time to time (always sanitized before and after so dont worry :)) and dont want to have to deal with coatings. A steel that was black throughout that didnt affect the metallurgy at all would be nice wouldnt it.

Nice hefty/durable EDC knife. Has more than enough blade material to stand up to light prying without damage(so far). Overall I would have preferred the G-10 variant with a slightly thicker and possibly modifiable to another custom grip liner, but it was $154 at the time while the plain titanium I purchased for $95. Just couldn't justify the $60 premium as I want a Spyderco Paramilitary or Military later on for slicing and finer point tasks.

If you have smaller-ish hands then removal of the knife and simultaneous smooth blade deployment without changing grip position may be difficult(tip up carry only).

I would have also gone with two washers on each side of the blade instead of one to reduce friction since the actuation is a little tight but is reasonable with some lubricant. The lack of an opening assist system makes the friction noticeable on deployment with a slight wrist flick being required usually. I will probably purchase a set of washers and see if having extra lubed washers makes a difference. I use a mix of 85 and 10 weight Nano-Oil and it last fairly long, doesnt run, and noticeable reduces friction. This way I can keep the barrel /pivot point tighter(better alignment) than I would otherwise be able to while still maintaining smooth movement.

Take a look at the Buck Glacier and the Kershaw Oso-Sweet. Two of my favorite EDCs.

After my Tenacious I went straight to a PM2, but if you think the Tenacious's tip is thin, the Paramilitary will give you a heart attack, haha.

I looked at the Mah Eraser that you spoke of, and immediately thought of ZT's 0770. It has a similar shape in both blade and handle. There's another Zero Tolerence that comes to mind, but I don't know the name/numbers of it off hand. The 0770 should be within your budget and be a plenty tough knife as well.

Hm only thing that comes to mind are Hinderer but pretty well above your budget

Also, the ZT 460 might be appealing to you.

For your budget, you could get a secondhand Benchmade Rift on the exchange...or even a Benchmade Griptilian with sheepsfoot blade (550hg) or mini (555hg), depending on how big a blade you actually want. The Benchmade 940 series gets lots of love, as well.
(Of the three, my personal choice is the rift)

Oh - check the ZT0770, as well

The Glacier looks a bit small and I personally can not stand pegs for opening folders, spyderco has unfortunately spoiled me. The Oso-Sweet look nice but it mirrors too many of the advantages I already have with the Tenacious for around the same price point and steel type.

Oh I was looking at the Paramilitary 2 and Military right before I stumbled across the Mah Eraser. They are direct upgrades to the Tenacious and come in steels that more than fit the bill. I am a big fan of a precise tip, but I just cant get over those times when I was going to use my knife for a task then hesitated because I didn't want to put stress on the fine tip. For soft piercing and slicing though the blade geometry is amazing.

The 0770 seems to be something ill keep my eye on but may not be possible for me since its spring assisted. Rules are a tad bit draconian here towards law abiding citizens. Was the other ZT knife you were thinking of the ZT Emerson 0630?

Overall I just get upset with myself for not finding the Eraser earlier since its a near perfect compromise for my uses. I would love to commission a custom one with higher grade steel and g10 furniture.

Hm only thing that comes to mind are Hinderer but pretty well above your budget

Oh geez those look very nice :) but youre right they are well above what I would want to pay for a folder at the moment. Maybe a custom fixed blade sure. Thanks for giving me more awesome eye candy to ogle though.

The Benchmade Rift looks nice but unfortunately automatic folders are a no-go where I live at this length. The Benchmade Griptilian (550-1) looks best out of the group since it lets me keep the spyderhole I have grown accustomed to lol. I can also that I can customize the steel between S30V, 20CV, and M4(maximum performance but needs care) so that is a plus. Any issues with the axis lock system that you know of?

Is the Manix 2 tip stronger?

ZT 0909 or Spyderco Manix 2.

I was looking at the Manix 2, Military, and Paramilitary 2, as direct upgrades but they all have the same relative blade shape with a relatively weaker tip. Although they have progressively slightly thicker blades as the cost increases. The ZT 0909 is drop point and hollow ground so I would run into a similar issue but it does have a much better steel than the Tenacious to compensate.

Thank you all for your input. Keep em coming if you have more recommendations. I will look at some reviews of what you have recommended and keep up the search.

I will add just to help clarify that ~3.3-4", sheepsfoot or reverse tanto(with curvature) geometry, and preferably in satin since I will use it for food from time to time (always sanitized before and after so dont worry :))

Strong contenders so far in the sheepsfoot/reverse tanto style
  • CKRT Mah Eraser
  • CRKT-Mah-Eraser-4.jpg

  • Benchmade Griptillian 550-1
  • benchmade-550-1-g-10-griptilian__83301.1451336313.1280.1280.jpg

Look into a Brous T4, they are long discontinued but the price is pretty reasonable on the secondary.

I will also plug my favorite fixed blade, J. A. Baker's S-Tac. They are a little over budget but are amazing!

While the Rift was available as an auto (I believe the auto was discontinued), the one pictured is neither automatic or assisted.

Axis lock is imo the best mechanism since you can operate it one handed and so smooth, also they have great warranty & customer service since you mentioned tip integrity

Another vote for the BM 550-1. Sounds like it fits exactly what you're looking for.

Good luck with your search!

I would defnitely avoid the Mah Eraser. I have heard many bad reports on all sorts of problems with that knife. If you are spending 100$ CRKT is probably not where you should be looking.

OP - ZT 0909 is not hollow grind. The reasons that I was recommending it include (1) it has a strong tip (relative to PM2 and Military), (2) it is (relatively) a good slicer among ZTs, and (3) it was recently discontinued so you can buy it brand new at ~$140, which is $40 cheaper than the regular MAP price. But be advised that it is a heavy folder (~7 ounces). Personally I'd choose it over that CRKT Mah Eraser any day of the week (they are not in the same league). Benchmade 550-1 is a nice candidate too, but I think it is over your budget of $150.

Spyderco Manix 2's tip is not the same as PM2 or Military. I believe it is stronger because it is wider.

I had the CRKT Mah Eraser, got it from our own Glockman99 over at the Ace of Clubs Tavern. Sure miss that guy.

Had the finest flipping action of any knife I'd owned before and since. There aren't enough "Os" in SMOOOTH to describe the action.

Got rid of it because it was bigger than I like for carry, and I knew somebody else would appreciate it more than me.

I think you'd like it. Get the very one you have pictured there, the plain edge in satin finish.

Perhaps post a request in the "Wanted to Buy" section of the exchange. You might get lucky.
