Trying to get into a trade?

Well, I recently lost my job of three years which was in the hospitality industry. I'm rather happy considering I am now unemployed. I guess I want to ask if anyone knows how to get into the trades, ie plumbing or electrician? It seems quite hard to get any experience since no one seems To want to give you a chance. I need help, I know the basics but really want to learn. Any help or advice would be great. I've applied at the electricians and plumbing Union out here in Orange county as well. Or any veteran programs. Thank you.
