I decided to spring for some of the 2010 models today. I ordered one of the new #598 Folding Ergo Hunters and a #342 small Vantage Pro. I also ordered one of the B & C green paperstone 301's in the tin.

I should have them next Monday or Tuesday and I'll post some pictures and my impressions of them when I get them.

I would love to but some of the paradigms, but they seem to never be coming out!

:thumbup:Way to go Dave!

I am just sitting here trying to decide how to help them out myself :D

I am thinking about the 342 Vantage pro also, and possibly the vantage avid, I havent used any of Bucks Sandvik knives yet....:o

I look forward to your reviews Dave! Especially of the ergo folder ;)

I like the SMKW's canoe. Not that into fishing myself though.

Broke down and bought a "normal" version of this blade and have enjoyed it. Like the style, wish it was US made.

Maybe you should get one of these from SMKW, so we can see what they look like;)

And here I was hoping for S30V or 154Cm.... Then I read the bottom... imported. Not much help for "Bucks" economy :D

It would be a great deal though, if you won the rod and reel! :D

I just ordered a couple of them even though they are imported.

Are you tring to say that buying some of Buck's knives if they are imported doesn't benefit Buck???

I don't believe that for one moment. Buck doesn't have them produced just for the fun of it.;)

There's a gambling insanity in our culture today--lotteries, casinos, pull tabs, scratch offs......and now they're even trying to make buying a brand new knife into a gambling game. What genius thought up this marketing ploy? It's an insult.

Freaking insane......and dysfunctional.

I won't comment on real gambling, I don't do it. I'm far too materialist to spend my money in that manner. BUT, one persons "insanity" is anothers "recreation".

I know people, my Wife and Mom were two of them, that truly enjoyed small time gambling and no way were they "insane". It was a form of recreation for them.

Are you trying to say ;)

Nope, I had a big smiley there and stated "not much help" :D

LOL, I don't gamble either, but a definition of insanity is "doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results" I keep buying all these Bucks... Expecting to finally get the end all be all Buck knife, and yet I keep on buying..... :D LOL

I'd be interested to know what the percentage of profit is between a USA made, say 301, vs a Chinese made one. I wouldn't be surprised to find that the profit is higher on the one made in China. I just don't know, but if it wasn't profitable, you can bet your bippy Buck wouldn't be doing it.

Another thing to think about is it may be possible that with out the import line, Buck couldn't survive.

I think it's a great marketing idea. It's not like they're selling a $20 knife for $100 with a lottery attached. They are selling a special edition knife for a few bucks more than the std one and a give away is attached. I'm good with that and would have bought the knife in a heartbeat.

However, not that into fishing and I already have a good user version.

If it helps to sell Buck knives I'm more than good with it.

I've been considering the Ergos myself. They are on the "must have" list. My question has been which one? I have got used to the 13C26 from the Vantage series and thought the 12C27 would be a downgrade. I'm not really in the market for a $100 plus Pro at this time and I have several s30v knives already. I dont want a cheap(not inexpensive but cheap) version, so I looked up a thread from around a year ago with Jerker from Sanvik and it quelled my concerns about 12C27. They actually consider it thier best all-around knife steel and has better corrosion resistance (a little more chromium% a little less carbon%), but still very good edge retention, sharpness and toughness(RC rating)
Check it out. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=613389&highlight=sandvik+110

2nd question is, does Buck really expect you to buy directly from them and is it that much of a benefit? At 40% over their authorized retailers like knifecenter, its hard to buy from them directly. I have to believe buying from the people that buy directly is just as beneficial cause the more we buy from them, the larger orders they commit to, to Buck.

Kudos to you Plum for doing the noble thing, not trying to downgrade that in the least. Just trying to justify my desire to buy the nicest knife at the lowest price and feel good about it while still pumpin money into the Buck coffers.

I agree that they must be profitable overseas and probably more but it cant be that much cause they are bringing alot of them back. I'm 43 years old but still manage to get an Easter basket and mine had a 285 mediim Bantam in it....with BUCK USA on the front. I have a 286 imported that has given uncriticized service but I sure am happy to have them coming from USA:thumbup: I expect they still make a good margin on them...I hope!

The same can be said of my 371 and 373-good knives but I'll be glad when they are the 301 and 303 with natural dymondwood handles.

It's sad but true Dave and that's what is going to make your USA Buck collection worth even more down the road in my opinion.I've been picking up old US made tools for awhile now at rural flea markets.Almost NO tools are US made now.The days of USA made knives may soon come to and end as well. That's why I'm buying at least 1 USA Buck every month!

Chuck, assured me while in his office at the 20yr. reunion that they were bringing as many models as possible, to be American made . Joe, stated later to me in an e-mail that they would most likely always will have a foreign contract of some limited models .
Their forced to do this inorder to stay competive in the market . DM

I have a confession to make. I really didn't buy the Ergo because of the S30V but because it comes with a leather sheath and the Rosewood inserts in the handle. :o I don't find the overall design and look of the knife particularly attractive and since I don't actually use most of mine, I bought it because it's the best looking one of the three in my opinion. I just wanted to have at least one example of the pattern.

I know what ya mean buddy, although I like the green alot, I would rather have the leather sheath. That rosewood insert is nice on the pro. Someday but there are so many knew nives to get:)
