Trying to identify Emerson ?Marcinko? knife?

First, I'm new here. I admit to being completely and totally ignorant about knives. I was given several knives and I'm trying to identify 2 of them. One is a Strider and the other an Emerson. This site was highly recommend as a good place to go.

The Emerson is a fixed blade knife that Ernie gave to Dick Marcinko many years ago (when they were still speaking to each other). I have not been able to find this "exact" knife anywhere. I'm pretty sure it's custom made or possibly a Proto-type? It looks like the knife called the "Rogue Warrior" or "Warrior" but the only identifying mark is the word "EMERSON" on the blade. The entire knife measures approx 9 3/4 in., the blade is approx 5 in.(tip of knife to where handle begins) and the handle measures approx 4 3/4 inches. Someone suggested the handle looks like it's hand shaped micarta material? Again, forgive my ignorance! Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Oh, I should add ... I sent several emails w/photos to what I thought was the Emerson info email address but didn't get a reply.

Haven't figured out how to post a picture but I'll email one to you. If it's not clear enough let me know and I'll try again. Thanks for taking a look at it. I'm new at collecting knives and I'd love to know what my first piece is. Again, thanks

BR, that is a heck of a first piece. FYI, the word Emerson like that is referred to as a half moon. You'll be getting an answer soon from Jbravo, probably one of the most knowledgeable guys about Emersons around.

From the size and general shape, I'd say it is a Phaser. The dimensions are same, as is the blade shape. It is a gorgeous example, with the rare halfmoon "Emerson" logo, a real collector's piece. It may be a variant, since the handle is slightly different from the current Phaser, and its Marcinko history adds to its appeal. The current market is very spotty, but I'd guess its worth at least $1,000 and maybe a good bit more. HTH

Thanks Lifter and Jbravo for the info! That's really good news! Not sure if the photo was clear enough but it's in mint condition. I'm pretty proud of it. It looks totally new and the blade has the original edge. If I can bother you with one more question, is it normal for the handle to be so rough? Originally, I thought it was wood till someone said it's probably hand shaped micarta. I like the shape and feel of the handle but just curious if there's a technical reason for the handle being so rough? Thanks

I own that knife's twin. A classic for sure. The rough handle is about a knife meant to be deployed in all kinds of weather and is meant to insure a secure grip when wet.

Thanks Jack. I thought it might be for a secure grip. Nice looking blade seems sort of odd the handle looks so rough but then I guess it's made more for function. That's cool that you have the twin to my knife. I did see one that looked like mine. It appeared to be about the same in size and looks but the blade had "EMERSON",his logo and SPECWAR on the blade. Do you know if that one was a different model or maybe an ealier or later version? Hope I'm not asking too many questions, just really happy to finally learn more about my knife.

BeginR, All the respondants to your post have given you good information on your fixed blade knife. My collection includes all of Ernies fixed blades but two and a Phaser is one I don't have. Could you send me a photo of your knife? I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Sure thing. Photos sent. I'd like to learn all I can about my knife. A relative got this knife from Marcinko for FREE and then gave it to me. I still can't believe my luck!

I believe they are back on speaking terms as Ernie's knives were featured in the newest book.
I wouldnt pretend to speak for either one of them but I believe the disagreement was over the name Rogue Warrior being used for a knife.

I have a relative who sometimes does admin work for Marcinko. The story they heard was Ernie Emerson approached Marcinko about doing a "Rogue Warrior" knife. Marcinko had a contract with Bruckheimer to do a movie which had clauses about trademark and merchandising rights so Marcinko told Ernie to hold off till his attorney went over his contract. Apparently Ernie didn't wait. Someone took a picture of Marcinko holding an Emerson knife and it appeared in a magazine with an article calling the knife the "Rogue Warrior" (put Marcinko in an ackward position since he had not received approval from his attorney or from Bruckheimer). Technically (and legally) there was never supposed to be a Rogue Warrior knife.

I asked if Emerson and Marcinko were on speaking terms and was told they only speak when forced to in social situations.

All that said, I think it's obvious from Marcinkos books that regardless of any diffences he and Ernie had ... Marcinko liked Emersons knives.

Let me know if you are interested in a cash offer for your emerson knife
thanks,
Dave Ellis
