Hi Guys!
I've been out of my shop for a while, bussines getting hard :ninja: But i continue working, study as much as i can to improve. I'm happy because i could get some new stuff for my shop:
My new oven:
A liquid nitrogen dewar for cryo my blades:
So now i've my shop well equiped, humble shop, but i can now reach other result.
I'm really pasionate about steels and heat treat, so i made a little investment one new steels:
Its time to try, fail, try, fail, try, fail (take a beer) try, fail
But there is no easy way to reach a good result without working hard. My first idea was finding 4 steels that can fit my needs. Cutlery as so many different needs that it's hard to make the correct choice. After spending month reading and talking with other knife makers, i would probably choose D2, CPM 154/RWL34/ATS34/154CM, ELMAX and CPM 3V. Those 4 steel could probably be a good choice, since they are popular around knife makers in differents areas. So its time to try all of them, make test, and getting knowledge about them.
As a beginner, i've tried first D2 steel, doesnt mean its an easy steel, but it's cheap and if i missed off i wont die
Thats was my first trying, but im not really happy with it... but it give me the experience i need. Some kind of big fighter blade with hand satin finish.
The second one, was a big challenge to me, probably to much complicated for my skill. But the problem is it was the birthday of my best friend and i want give to him a good blade, that was the result:
There is a lot of big mistakes on this blade (as usual) grind lines could be better, a smaller wheel is more suitable for a double grind. My mirror polish could be better, etc....
After that, i've made a step backward. I had to start with basic knife, maybe forget about free hand grinding just for a moment and complete a basic knife well. So i made this blade for a good friend, a humble drop point, with N690 steel + cryo. Instead of putting a mirror polish a though it was time to improve my hand satin finish:
At thats all my friends
i'm glad to sharing with you my little steps in the knife making world
when i look to my first blade... (brace yourselves)
...It give me the punch to work harder! it was about year and half when i start this crazy project and hope keep improving until i could reach my goal (a good knife maybe?)
Hope you enjoy the post, thank you guys for spending reading me!
Best regards,
Kim
