Probably the second traditional knife I owned was a stockman bought from the awesome display at the local Ace Hardware store when I was a boy. My question is this, I always assumed the pattern 'stockman' was since it was intended for a fellow who worked in some sort of store, stocking the shelves, and used the knife in his day to day chores. As a young guy, I worked several jobs like this, and found plenty of use for the longer clip blade, and plenty as well for the sheepfoot/wharnecliff blade as well, but almost never used the pen blade. I am curious if this blade had a particular use in mind when it was manufactured.

I've tried to search for this info, with no luck--if there are some tips for searching I'm open to any input.

The Stockman knife, or Stock Knife, takes it name from the men who carried this knife that worked Livestock, mostly cattle. A true stockman pattern knife has a Spey Blade as one of the secondary blades. Due to the lack of a sharp point on a spey blade, this blade was widely used for castrating livestock of all kinds, but mostly cattle. This was just another chore done by the stockmen at round-up time.

Well, once again this shows how much I don't know. Maybe there's a pattern for stockboys that work in drugstores or the like?

Thanks for the info rma100

Beat me to it ;)

But pen blades... Originally were used for cutting quills for use as pens.

When I worked stocking orders for my family's wholesale grocery business, it was hard to beat a box cutter. It had a heavy, sharpen-able blade, not a snap-off/throwaway type!
