THANKS!

Judging by the title, I thought you were going to walk out of that frigid stream again, this time wearing a bacon-bathing suit....That might make Rick quiver...or shudder :D

Nice job with the Knotweed(?) Its not the easiest material for this job.! Edit to add.... Or, is that Yucca?

I have a feeling that Master Marchand will be along to talk about blade temper though.

His knives have such a great style to them. It's like he has been making them for 30+ years already.

It is my bet that that big blade was conducting a lot of cold into your tinder, robbing it of heat.
I could be wrong but nice vid and firebow skills.

OMG!!!!! TOTALLY RUINED AND SPAT UPON ALL THAT HARD WORK.

Don't be surprised if you can't cut diamonds anymore, bud.

This is the email I just sent jcl-MD...

If the edge turned blue, then yes the temper is ruined. I watched the
video. The heat in that punkwood pile is reaching about 1200F... I temper
my blades to 450F max. For a short period(few seconds) it wouldn't matter,
but you created a small oven by piling on the punk. I think you tempered
the body of the blade but as long as the edge didn't discolour, you are
okay. Heck even if it did ruin the temper, it will only be in that
localized area. All it means is that the metal is softer.... softer is
tougher... but won't hold an edge as good.

Someone brought up a good point about the steel conducting away the heat
from your ember..... very true.

DON'T do that anymore. lol.

Rick

AND..... I will still honor the happiness guaranty..... 'cept for edge retention within that 1" section of steel.:p

The knife is still good.... as are your firemaking skills.

jcl-MD made a good point to me in a phone conversation. The knife didn't even get hot enough to melt the foam pad it was on. I think the punkwood was insulating the heat. I still don't advise using the knife for that when you have more efficient options available.

Well heck there goes my plans to ues the knife to chisel out a likeness of Rick out of marble LOL!!:p

THANKS to everyone for keeping me in check on this !! I was clueless !!!!
I need to quit being lazy and find a beter ember pan Ha!!

THANKS
