Trying to patina a stripped BK9. What looks like rust suddenly popped up?

It was soaked in vinegar for a good while, then I put mustard all over it willy nilly, washed the mustard off, then realized that the other side has somewhat rust colored stuff on it. It doesn't wipe off easy and doesn't exactly seem like rust. I just put some mustard on that side and now it's getting the patina now. Is it rust or just the patina?

Patina is nearly the same thing as rust... just a more controlled oxidation. Sounds like you left the mustard on too long. Hit it with a Scotchbrite pad and start over. Don't leave it on as long.

Don't have a Scotchbrite pad. I'll just have to leave it on there until I go to town next. I oiled it up good. Pictures in another thread.
