I want to do a knife throwing show -- starting out locally doing charity events and demonstrations for free and for fun. Lots of times, I'll have kids from the neighborhood who'll take seats on my deck and watch me throw, and they love it because I act all silly for them. But, I need to put together an act that is consistent and fun. If you all know suggestions I can practice, let me know:

What works? What doesn't?

Close in (8 yards) speed throwing or long distance?

Use Manican (sp?) to throw around or a cartoon pic on board? (I'm certainly not throwing around a human quite yet!!!)

popping balloons, cutting fruit, etc?

Best distance to throw from? (this is a biggie for me -- I've seen throwing from 8 yards to what looks like 15)

Any help is appreciated!!!!

OK, no one is responding. So maybe I'll throw something out there to see if someone likes it for part of the show:

I'm pretty good at throwing quickly. When I work fast, though, I am not as accurate right now. I think a few weeks of practice will make it better. I typically stand about ten feet from the target and I throw as fast as I can around a target. I won't be working with human targets right now, but I was thinking about a large teddy bear, or a mannequin. Any thoughts? Does this sound fun? I would probably use some good, fast music and try to throw to the beat. For fast throwing, I'm best with a smaller knife -- Hibben's 8.5" works well for me. I could go bigger if need be. I'll see what the comments are if there are any. I'd appreciate the help.

Do you just throw knives? How about tomahawks? It's be sick to see you throw an axe through some fruit. Otherwise get a life size sports player card board cut out from a rival team and throw at that.

elijames, thanks for the feedback! That's a great idea with the rival player card. I'm trying to find a way to make it humorous but NOT to advocate throwing at humans at the same time, if you know what I mean. A team logo is different, so that might work. Kids with Aspergers and high-functioning Autism take things very literally, so if I throw at a picture of a specific person, they'll think I'm trying to hurt that person, and I don't want to give them that idea. But a logo...that's a great idea!

I've been practicing with knives primarily but am getting a Chakram. I've never thrown a hawk. I guess I need to start though. I see some other professional throwers incorporate them into their shows. Thank you.
