Trying to tell if knife is covered by ESEE

I was looking to purchase a used knife but I am not sure if it is the one produced by Ontario or is it covered by the ESEE warranty? I have no intentions of destroying it to find out but I have a few ESEE knives now and like the fact that if I do have a problem then I can get it replaced. The knife is a RAT-5 but I don't know how to tell if its an Ontario or a pre Ontario/ESEE spit knife. Any help?
 
ESEE 5 was called RAT 5 under Ontario, and for a time, was called RC5 under the new company. Rowan should be on the new blades, ESEE's and the RC's.
 
I have the new ESEE/Rowen 5 and like it. This is a D2 RAT-5 knife that I was looking at. Never really handled one before but the price isn't bad.
 
Get the Rat5 if you care to, but it's an Ontario knife. There has been some commentary regarding the consistency of the heat treat on these knives, though.

IMHO - if you want an ESEE "5" then get one when budget allows. They are excellent knives.
 
Ok, I was just wondering if it was covered under the ESEE warranty since I know they cover pre split knives. I love the ESEE 5 I have and want one more now for another pack but I will just get another ESEE 5 when I see a used one or save up for a new one.

Yep

THE RAT - 5 is decent enough - while its not a ESEE or RC5 it'll do a decent enough job warranty or not.

Where have they stated they cover pre-split knives? They cover anything with RC/ESEE on the blade. Not anything made by Ontario.

I'm hoping this was a typo on your part -- ESEE does not warranty any Ontario made knives, only the RC/ESEE blades made by ROWEN.
 
It's simple. If it says rowen on the tang, it's covered by esee

If it says Ontario, it's covered by Ontario.

The rat 5 will say Ontario on the oppsite side tang.

The rat 5 and rc5/esee 5 are totally diffrent designs

I've never seen them claim or do anything for pre split knives. It's a diffrent company.
 
Oh, I thought they covered the knives that were before they went to Rowen. I see that I misread the warranty info on the site. I took it as a date thing but they are saying that they only back the RAT cutlery and now ESEE knives.
 
irishfan82, The pre-split knives were manufactured by Ontario from RAT designs. Ontario warranty.

There was another split recently, with DPx forming its own business, after ESEE had arranged manufacture of the HEST. These pre-DPx made HESTs will be covered by an ESEE warranty. This split has nothing to do with RAT/Ontario, though.
