TS-55, a japanese steel?

I have bought during vacation a very cheap japanese knife in a chinese shop. It is more a fighter/hunter type, about 6" blade, nice, full tang handle with slabs (micarta, wood,?) in two colors. Blade shape reminds me of the Buck 119 Special, but the knife has an integral half-guard (like Hossom's knives).
There is a text in japanese letters on the blade and, in addition, it stays

TS-55
MADE IN JAPAN

I bought a knife because it is an interesting design, and, because it is my first japanese knife (Spyderco knives produced in Japan do not count).
I guess that the steel used may be some sort of 420 series (because the price was low). My guess is that TS-55 specifies a steel.

Anybody knows more about TS-55 or some table of exchange US vs. Japan steel notation?

That was my initial reaction too - but it's a cheap knife and at one time ATS-55 was regarded as "premium" (claimed to be better than ATS-34) - so the likeihood of the steel actually being ATS-55 seems fairly low to me.

The glaring fact that the "A" is missing might be like those US ads for "umlimited" calling times - Mount Blanc Pens, Rollex watches.....
