TSPROF KADET and Kak Britva Wide Central Clamp

I bought and received the Kak Britva Wide Central Clamp and the associated Gear Connect adapter for my TSPROF KADET. There is a hole in the Gear Connect adapter that appears to allow the adapter to slide over the large knob in the center of the TSPROF KADET mounting rail. However, the knob protrudes beyond the adapter and the Kak Britva Wide Central Clamp impacts the knob and will not mount flush with the adapter. Is the large central knob on the TSPROF Kadet supposed to be taken off when using this adapter?

Yes, simply screw off the Kadet cap when you install the Gearconnect adapter. It is a threaded cap only for aesthetic value.

When using the Kadet to KakBritva central wide adapter, the cap screw on the Kadet would be too long to have the KakBritva central wide clamp align with the length of the original Kadet Clamps (if you were to use them together). If you were to use some K03 clamps and the other Gearconnect K03 to KakBritva central wide adapter on the Kadet, then the length of the cap would not be a problem because K03 clamps are a lot longer.

You're going to love using the KakBritva central wide clamp on your Kadet. Opens up a whole new world.

Thanks 777! I bought the Kak Britva clamp based on some information you posted quite awhile back. I am trying to achieve acute angles on some small knives (only 10-12 mm wide). With 9mm overhang beyond the Kak Britva clamp I have been able to achieve an angle of 17 degrees without hitting the clamp. One side of the clamp is thicker than the other or I believe I could go even lower on the angle.

My pleasure!

I assume you got it mounted nicely now on your Kadet? Which one (opening size / cutout angle) of the KB Center wide clamps did you get for yourself?

For a small blade - If need be, try clamping at the flat "tang" part of the blade, and you may even be able to move it slightly further out.

As for one side of the clamp that you found slightly thicker, you could try grinding it away slightly with the knife clamped in it, like you're sharpening. Your stones should make quick work of the aluminum and you should be able to thin it out a bit more quite easily.

I got the 6mm flat.
I believe I've clamped about as far back as I can.
Good idea on thinning down the clamp!

For small knives on my Kadet, I find the single filet clamp for the K03 works the best.

Thanks gspam. I may end up getting the filet clamp. Most of my sharpening is on small knives so I'm looking for the best clamping system that will accommodate small knives at a 15 degree or so sharpening angle.

If you get the TSPROF fillet clamp, make sure to get a Gearconnect adapter for your original 2 Kadet clamps to lengthen them in case you want to use them all together.

You also have the option of a Hapstone fillet clamp and it's related Gearconnect adapter if you wanted to, but again get the Kadet extension Gearconnect adapters so you can use them all together.

If you want to use your KakBritva central wide together with the TSPROF or Hapstone clamps, you'll also need the higher profile K03 Gearconnect adapter for your KakBritva clamp.

I originally bought the Kak Britva clamps and adapters thinking those would work best for small knives, but they aren't long enough for me to get anything less than 18 degrees, even after grinding the top of the clamps down. The knife edge has to be farther away from the clamp mount to get a shallow angle. I don't generally sharpen anything below 15 degrees and the single filet clamp does that easily. The Britva clamps would work fine for a wide blade as do the stock Kadet clamps. Again, I have small to tiny knives mostly. Everything fits in the watch pocket.

I can get down to 13 dps on my standard Victorinox blade, and down to 20 dps on my small Victorinox blade with my KakBritva clamps, but I guess your blades must have blades smaller / narrower than a standard Victorinox blade?

Spyderco Ladybugs, Manbug sized blades. Even having the blades stick as far out of the clamp as I could on the Kak Britva, I couldn't get to 18 dps. With the single filet clamp though, no problem.
