While in Dallas last weekend, a friend passed a brochure to me. The brochure was to introduce a concept for an opening device that the designer called the Tsunami Curl. I'll quote from the brochure.

"A unique system that combines the ease of opening of a one-hand opening stud, a one-hand opening hole and a clothing-hook opener into a single elegant ambidextrous opening system."

What the guy is doing is opening a spyder hole on its front so that the open portion acts much like a wave opening device on Emerson's knives.

Has anyone seen one of these or heard of this?

I'll try and get the brochure scanned in so you can see the pics.

Certain fellow whose first and last initials are the same is not going to be too happy about that, if it ever gets off the ground.

I've seen people do the same thing to Spydercos, chopping off a piece of it -- apparently it works just fine. But for the above reasons, I wouldn't suggest doing it to anything except the knife in your pocket.

I'd love to see pics! By the description, it sounds like a clear violation of Emerson's patent, which I'm sure he'll take care of.

This guy is not producing knives, nor is he even doing knife modifications. At least the brochure doesn't mention any. The brochure says:

" I am a lifetime knife enthusiast and have been working in retail cutlery for the last 2.5 years. I designed this system in response to customer comments and my own desire to have a universally applicable one-hand opening design. I feel this design incorporates the best attributes of today's most popular systems to create a new unique system. It is my hope to be able to see this system on production knives. I currently lack the skills to produce knives with my system as I am not a handmade knife maker. I have received positive response from other knife lovers who have seen my system and feel that most knife lovers would receive it positively as well. To that end I am seeking a company willing to help me see my idea to fruition."

Hope that helps.

I actually would like to see Emerson have the wave be a choice on all his models. So far it is limited to two knives, In my opinion that is a waste of an awesome invention. If I could I would get all my folders with the wave. There is no reason not too considering you don't have to use it if you don't want to. All in all it sucks if someone is stealing his idea. Although I would love to see spydie's with some sort of clothing hook. I have also noticed that the cold steel T-lite can be opened like the wave. All in all the wave is a very cool feature and I would like to see more knives incorporate it or something like it.

"Clothing Hooks: have been around since that 1950's that I know of. We used to file them into "fruit" knives in the mid 50's.

I have seen them near the tips of the knife all the way back to the rear of the spine. We've had a number of designers send us designs for same over the years. There have been at least 2 that have come out in production that I've seen at the SHOT show over the past 20 years. Both were from people outside of the industry so the quality and designs of their knivefs were lacking. They couldn't sell the "hook" concept on a poor quality knife. At least Ernie makes good knives. We've had a number of people file the front of the hole on Spyderco models to create a "hook", mostly to open beer.

I believe that one may also file a "hook" into one or both sides of a "disc" for the same effect.

well at least the guys admitting he is incorporating current systems and not claiming that he came up with the wave idea.
