Anyone got any info on the CAS/Hanwei Tsunami Tanto? The one with the buffalo horn tsuka, etc. I am wondering how good the saya is, as in lacquered, or just painted, is the habaki really solid brass, or coated plastic? Has anyone done any hardness testing on the hamon?

it's brass. The finish may be a little rough. I think all the mid-level and up (including the Tsunami series) have black lacquered scabbards...

I don't think they've done the plastic habaki since the debacle five years ago or so....

but not any tanto... the mekugi have been bamboo and non-tapered (though on some models, like the Bugei or upper Hanwei stuff, they may be, but never handled those....)
here's a good pic of it.

But I would expect it to be removable.... I'd ask an online retailer (preferably one that knows what they're talking about). The handle shape looks interesting, much different than the other Hanwei tanto...

Based on what I've found: tsuka is additionally secured by neji menuki style thing that screws together(Shadow of Leaves has them on his site) and acording to the paper hanwei catalogue the whole tsuka is covered in rings of buffallo horn with conventional metal koshirae. Not much info found in my cursory searching....

Hey, thanks a lot brother. Not much time for me to do research these days (I'm in Iraq, computer access is fairly limited).
