What do you guys (gals) think about the above referenced axe/hatchet? What usages are they best at(cutting/splitting, combination of both etc)? I very much appreciate your inputs..

Depends on the age really. The older ones are of good quality, while the newer ones(late 70s, 80s) are suspect at best. Any idea what you have? Are there ridges in the eye of the axe? Imprint, paper logo, etc? Color of the head?

Thanks operator1975! The one I am considering does have a paper label which if my eyes dont deceive says ridges inside and something else I cant make out. The color of the head is red. It has what looks to be a number 15 scribed into the metal and some other insciptions I cant make out. It is 27" inches long and the head is 6" x 3 1/2" x 1".

Ah yes, what you have is a later Woodslasher - probably late 70s by the sound of it. These are usually of pretty good quality still, I have some that are, and some that are not, so I do not want to lead u astray. Ridges in the eye obviously to hold the haft better, and the markings came in all sequences, I have a couple that start with C - C45, C47, etc. I bet it would sharpen up nice as the metal was still of decent quality then. Once you pass 1980 the overall quality of many axes takes a nose dive. I would get some better pics or get your hands on it if possible, and if you think the price is right, well that is what really matters.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks!!!

The bottom one is an example of a Woodslasher - it should be pretty similar to the larger lines, say a boys axe or a full size. Hope this helps!

wow thanks for all the help, the one I am looking at is almost identical to the bottom pic you posted. The wooden handle on the one I am thinking on is marked 2Y1K with possibly an E in front of the 2. I cant tell for sure if it is 5 digits or 4 digits.

Ok good info. So you are probably looking at a late 70s. Are you looking at pics, or can you get your hands on it?

It was on a popular auction site and I just got outbid by a couple bucks. I really apprciate all your help. I dont think I can post what the end bid was on it..

If it is over you can, as far as I know. No live auctions can be posted. But it really doesn't matter now anyway.

Hope I helped for next time!

Very telling image. Note how nicely convexed the cheeks are on the old hatchet. Then on the new one they're dead flat. Also, the old one has a decent grain while the new one is almost 90* off of what it should be. They don't make 'em like they used to.
