They are finally in the finishing department!
Remember my contest from waaayyy back? Well, I awarded a couple of knives, sheerly on production values, and there are more prizes to come.
GEC has designed and made their own version, and they are about to be released - any second now. I am in fact waiting for a jpeg to arrive so I can post it here.
It is already on their website under the prosaic name of Tube Popper - sigh. . . . . .

Anyway, I am going to send a bunch of them out to some of the enthusiastic entries in that nearly forgotten contest!

And if someone manages to upload their pic in the meantime, that would be great!

Ahhh, I've got mail - here it is now!!

I have been assured that all functions have been thoroughly teshted, and itsh the besht darn plopper in the shtate of pennysilverania!!

Those look really cool! I can already see some nice wood adorning one or two of these in the future! :D

Fantastic! Wondered what you were up to Charlie! Very nice :)

Jack, other than the original idea, which you all so graciously and enthusiastically helped with, this design was strictly in house, without my input.
But I am glad to see it. And I am sure it will be the most tested product GEC has ever made except for knives!!:D

Besides Tubie Doobie, I will remind you of some of the great name ideas that emerged from the fiasco!
Sissy Bar
Tom's Tool
Friendly Finger of Freedom
All Thumbs
The Enabler
Tube-O-Matic
Proto-Rooter
GECKO (Great Eastern Cutlery Knifetube Opener)
Archimedes (lever?)
Tube Key

They look useful. What will they be made from Charlie? Will they have GEC stamps or anything?

I would like to know also. Hopefully it will take a nice patina, but either way it's super cool!

Btw, I like Sissy Bar best, but then I'm a biker. ;)

I suppose this will cancel out the need for my recently patented (intellectual copyright only) Self Popping tube.
ah well back to the drawing board.

Too scary - for old rocking chair farts anyway!

Any idea when and where they'll go on sale Charlie? I don't want to miss them and I think they'll vanish quickly...

Really? That's interesting Charlie. It's certainly a good idea. What a waste of all those great names though! :D

Yeah it worked great. Kept having to buy new microwave ovens though.
r8shells "Prystachio Bar" is a thing I could use.
Apologies Charlie-mate I had at least 10 canulas inserted into my arms in the period between Saturday and Tuesday. They wouldn't stay in and (this ones for you Jack) I kept expecting one of the nurses ,doctors, tea ladies ,cleaning staff or anyone else who was having a go at putting one in to shout "ONE HOONDRED N FAWWTEEEE!."

Meako, I see your body's defense mechanisms are working overtime!
Get better soon, if that is appropriate! ???

Prystachio-ing is a brilliant secondary use for those sissy bars!! Thanks for the idea r8shell - I am using one as we speak!!

I kinda like the idea of it having a bunch of different names. It's like a Hoagie/Sub/Grinder/Torpedo/etc. Everyone has their own name for it.

Yes, please, Meako.

In practice, I've found that GEC's current blade keys don't work as well as those with broader heads.

Looking at the Tubie-Doobie (which sounds vaguely illegal), I'm wondering if the square end might prove even more functional as a nick pick than the pointier end:

Once Charlie completes his Tinker Tailor project and has time for other pick pursuits, perhaps we'll gain a better idea.

Charlie,
this whole tubie doobie business really got you in too deep :p

Sarah,
I was wondering the same thing: I see the broader, flatter end as a much more useful side :)

We will have to do a comparison test!

I am beginning to think the same thing!!

Mebbe for long pulls?

On Tom's Tool, the wide tip is thicker and stronger for its prying task, so I think it will not open most knives. GEC tapered the round tip to make it work. And, if the tip is too wide OR thick, it will "jump" out of the nick at the slightest twist!!
I suspect I can help with a technique that will make them all work better. Soon . . . . I have to take some pictures first.
