Man, that is one fantastic looking rig. I love the lines that the Sgt builds into his khuks.

Can someone give me a steel on this. Im not looking for a link, but maybe a numerical 10xx or 51xx, 52xx, 40xx. chrome dipped?
thanks.

The HI khukuris are all made from recycled Mercedes truck leafsprings. I believe the consensus is that it is 5160.

That's got to be one of the best proportioned khuks of its type I've ever seen. Gorgeous work by the good Sgt.

Shankmaster usually 5160 steel is used, pre-tested in the leafsprings of mercedes Benz.
Differentailly hardened. These are the finest Khuks made.

Dui chirra found a nice home, thank you

I just got that Wide heavy duty Tin Chirra from 5/5/08 DOTD or I would have got this!!! What a nice blade!!!

Speaking of the steel, does anyone know how the HI kamis get the blades looking so polished??? Is it inherent in the type of steel or is it the proces they use? That "chrome" look is not found on other knives in general. What makes the HI khuks so "chrome" looking??? Thanks for your help.

They don't look polished, they are polished. :)

As to how--just buffing and polishing until it looks that way. There is absolutely NO steel that can't be made mirror, you just have to do the work. There's actually a functional benefit to it, especially as these blades get shipped all over the world to all sorts of climates, that the finer (meaning smoother) the surface finish is, the more difficult it is for moisture to accumulate. Bead blast one of them and it'll turn into a corroding demon. With only a little care, and amidst a lot of use, I've only ever had one of these khuks develop appreciable rust, despite the fact that there's not a thing in the world "stainless" about them. And that one case was entirely my own fault; a splatter of blood left sitting on the blade, which I would have cleaned off much more swiftly had I not had a more immediate concern on my mind. ;)
