Tuf-Cloth use on knives. Is it safe for food?

I have used Tuf-Cloth on my knife after sharpening (My first use of the Spyderco Sharpmaker).

A day later, I can still smell the mineral fumes on the blade. Is it a bad idea to cut an apple with it and eat it?

This topic has come up a lot and the best answer I can give is as follows:

Technically speaking the mineral spirits evaporates fairly quickly, what you're smelling is the actual coating left behind (the mineral spirts is just the carrier). The protective coating is not considered "food safe" but I don't think there's a single member that hasn't used a Tuff coated blade to peel and apple or something like it. That being said, I don't use it on any of my kitchen knives. Basically I don't think it will hurt you, but I certainly wouldn't expose myself to it all the time (i.e. kitchen knives). Also I'm just giving an opinion from my experiences, I ain't a doctor

god, stop asking this question. how about another what's your favourite knife thread or something else equally asked to death. why haven't we made an FAQ for these common questions mike or spark? (if we have plz ignore this rant, and I know this should be done in the Whine and Cheese...)

I think it's an important question, and as I am new I obviously don't know the answer.

If you don't like, Tuf.

Get it? Tuf. Ha ha ha!

Not sure if this helps but on the package it says: "wash hands after use." and "Keep away from children"

Two warnings that I have never seen on an orange juice container.

Is Tuf-Cloth safe for food? I suppose so. But then, the food is already dead, isn't it.

Dang I'm funny.

All seriousness aside, did you know Superman wipes his @$$ with a Tuf-Cloth?

I'll confess that I use it on my knives and I use them to cut food all the time. Sometimes I wipe the residue off first. Sometimes I don't. I figure the food I eat is going to kill me fast enough with or without Tuf-Cloth. To keep things in perspective, just remember that approximately 1,000,000 people died during the Siege of Leningrad.

I don't know whether or not it's poisonous - probably not - but, man if it tastes like it smells you might wish it were poisonous.

I kind of like the smell. I can't wait to get my share of the multi-billion-dollar Tuf-Cloth punitive damages settlement.

Stop when you get to bone.

Are TUF-CLOTHs safe for food use? Yes, this is addressed on our web site FAQs and yes, this has come up a lot, but not since last year. Quick answer- TUF-CLOTH is not an FDA approved product. Please read on for the rest of the story…

If you plan to cut food with a TUF-CLOTH treated blade we suggest that you wash the blade first. The washing/wiping simply removes any excess which might transfer.
TUF-CLOTH’s protection is micro-bonded to the metal surface of blades etc.. This bonding reduces the possibility of transferring material to food items that might be cut. Bonding is also the principle reason why our products are so effective.

None, of Sentry Solutions' products are FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved. FDA approval is required for any product which a manufacturer states is safe to use with food. Indeed none of the products discussed in these forums- Ren. Wax, White Lighting etc. are FDA approved and so none of them can be assumed to be safe for use with food. In the two+ years I have been visiting Blade Forums I have never seen any input on this subject from the manufacturers of those products. I, for one, am curious but not because I use them. I am one of Sentry’s owners and a biologist by training. I am personally concerned with the safe use of our products. Sentry Solutions is very sensitive to peoples concerns about health etc. To that end we have developed products that are safe to use.

The active ingredients, those that bond are non-toxic and biodegradable. Again- the products are not FDA approved. A few words on FDA Approval- FDA approval requires that not only a product be non-toxic but that the product is made using clean/bacteria/germ free materials and ingredients and manufactured and packaged in a clean/bacteria/germ free environment. Basically the manufacturing conditions are for food and medical products. That would dictate our clothes, bags etc. be washed before use and the products manufactured under food/medical grade conditions. Our products are safe, industrial products.

Now a chance for me to blow the Sentry Solutions horn- TUF-GLIDE won the BLADE 2000 Knife Accessory of the Year Award, of course TUF-CLOTH won the Blade Forums Award in 1998. Our TUF Products are now endorsed and recommended by more than 40 knife & tool companies. A big THANK YOU to all of our supporters, you know who you are. We put so much work into our products it is great to see that people really like them. I hope to see a bunch of you at Blade West in September. I will be giving a seminar on Knife Care so come with your tough questions.

Oh yes- David, don’t count on any money from a lawsuit but perhaps you’ll be interested in our IPO, it will be a much better bet.

I plead guilty to being one of those who have asked this question here more than once, but this is the first time I have ever received anything like an answer. Thank you! I have checked the Sentry Solutions web site before, but didn't find anything about food before today. Just wasn't looking in the right place I guess, I just found it. My bad.

Raver and others, I certainly don't mind questions coming up on our products even if they have been answered before etc.

Sounds like our web site isn't the easiest to navigate. Sentry will be launching a new site shortly and if you folks have any comments or input for the new site I would really appreciate receiving them. My email is mark@sentrysolutions.com

Thanks.
