I was thinking about getting a Tuf-Cloth sheet, but I wanted to know how long they last for approximately? I heard they're great for preventing rust in high-carbon blades, but I'm not sure how much to buy at one time.

Buy one, use it, put it back in the resealable pouch, and it will stay fresh a long time.

If it dries out you can add mineral spirits or Tuf-Glide to bring back its original feel. It should last for quite a long time.

Thanks guys. Another question: How long does it work on the knife? After a couple of washings would it come off, or can it bond for a long time?

Depending on what you use the knife for, you might rub it off the next time you use it. It's not like it becomes part of the metal. But it's good for rubbing into the corners (and I like to make sure the pivot area is lubed pretty good) because that's where corrosion can hide and grow).

Honestly, I don't think it's a virulent poison, but I don't like using it on knives I'd use on food, so I just rub a little food-grade mineral oil on my knives, instead. Mineral oil is great on fixed blades, because I put them back in the sheaths with the excess oil on them, and grease up the inside of the sheaths themselves. :)

Needle, DON'T USE IT ON A COATED BLADE! it works great, but can strip the coating off (unless it's teflon or TiNi, if I'm correct). If the blade is coated, use teflon based RemOil.

Thanks guys, I might go with the mineral oil. I happen to have a bottle here, so that would probably be the best idea. (This is for a fixed blade, not a folder, by the way).

I am using a Marine Tuff Cloth I bough at the 2000 Blade Show. It is all ragged and has been washed a couple times but it is still working like new, possibly due to be stored on its pouch. Not bad, uh?!

but does it really repel dirt and tiny junk? and if you cut paper does it leave junk on the paper? i read its a "dry" protection but then i hear the cloth needs to be moist.

When the cloth is moist, it feels merely greasy. It is dry once it's on the blade. Since I didn't use it on food, I didn't worry or notice if it greased up wood or weeds I cut. :D

Ivan is right. When you keep it in the pouch, it really holds its moisture well.

I generally use my food grade mineral oil right at the kitchen sink, so I don't worry about dripping a little. I could carry it around by soaking some into a scrap of cloth, maybe an old handkerchief, and sealing that in a plastic baggie.

but does it really repel dirt and tiny junk?

At one time, the knife I always carried walking in our local woods was a Vaquero Grande. I would chop weeds and thorns away from the trail. This naturally left thick plant juices on the blade, really gunked it up. Then a little alcohol would cut the gunk and clean it right off.

Once I started using Tuf-Cloth, the sap wouldn't stick to the blade, and the effect would last a few days of use, too.

What is TUF-CLOTH:
It's a unique replacement for oil/silicone gun and reel cloths. Sentry Solutions combines state-of-the-art dry film technology with a lint-free fabric to make TUF-CLOTH a superior, long-lasting product for both rust protection and lubrication. Sentry developed a formula of dry film rust inhibitors and lubricants which bond to metals. This mix impregnates a very durable yet soft cloth for easy application. TUF-CLOTH should be used to protect all types of metals and finishes, woods, and most plastics. It makes oil and silicone rags obsolete.

HOW IT WORKS:
Wiping with TUF-CLOTH gives you cleaning, rust protection and lubrication. Pure mineral spirits is the carrier for the active ingredients and provides cleaning action. It evaporates, and Sentry's proprietary ingredients bond to the surface; this bonding assures long lasting effectiveness. TUF-CLOTH's waterproof protection will not wash off, thicken in the cold (even down to -40°F/-40°C) or attract dirt like oil-based products, nor is it a slippery film like silicone. TUF-CLOTH is user-adjustable; either by drying in air or adding TUF-GLIDE or pure odorless mineral spirits. A "wetter" cloth applies a thicker shield of protection that dries more slowly. The excess can be buffed off after it is dry without compromising performance. A dry TUF-CLOTH makes a terrific polishing cloth; it beautifies wood and gives blue metals a deep luster.

I just use the Tuf-Glide directly. One drop or more on each side of the blade, spread and wipe with a clean rag. This way I do not have to worry if my cloth is still effective as I can see a wet layer of Tuf-Glide on the blade. I also end up with my own home made "Tuf Rag", which I use for quick touch ups, eg. wiping off fingerprints after handling or after minor use.

I re-apply every 6 months or so for knives that I do not use. Has kept my carbon blades pristine and shiny. A patina does not even form.

But I really do not know if Tuf-Glide will last through a washing though.

they work ok, i dont know if they are any better than any other good lube on a cloth though......................i do use it on knives and guns and stuff like that though FWIW
