Tuf-Cloth/Tuf-Glide says that it chemically bonds to the metal and won't rub off or wash off. So, how does it come off? Only when the metal is removed or when it is exposed to use that would similarly remove a blade coating? If a blade does not see any use how long will the Tuf last?

That's a great question!

I've been using Marine Tuf-Cloth for years and never had any corrosion on users or stored knives, some having never been touched for 15+ years. I don't store my knives in any sort of protected casings. Just thrown into a drawer full of other knives. The users get a re-coat only when I remember to do so... Could be months or years. Of course the edges do get ground down a bit when sharpened, but I don't always re-coat at that time either. But none of my blades show any sort of rusting, so the stuff must be working.

I wonder just how long Tuf-cloth does last?

here in Texas S30V and similar SS gets coated once a month. Tool and high carbon steels get it a couple times a month.

Texas is hard on knives especially when you're carrying something close to the body.

As far as stored knives go i've never had any problem with rust, but i still coat them every few months.

it will wear off even on lightly used knives...but i haven't found anything that works better in the Texas climate and i've tried a great many things. S30V starts to pit every week if i don't stay on it. they only steel that i can use here that doesn't need it quite so often is Duratech 20CV (great steel all around!!!). D2, 3V, 1095, 5160, M4....they all rust within a day or two of carrying if i don't coat them daily.

hope that helps
