Tuff Glide and CRK Fluorinated Grease does not mix!

When I got my Umnumzaan a weeks or so ago, it was just barely/slightly stiff...perfect...because after a week of playing with it, it turned butter smooth, to the point of thumb flicking it open to a soft click upon lockup, without any wrist involvement.

Well, I was using Tuff Glide to lube my other knives, so I decided to put a few drops into the gap between the blade and Ti scales of the Umnumzaan (without disassembly). You know, Tuff Glide is a dry lube with applies in liquid form and dries quickly. So, when I first put the drops, the Umnumzaan was even smoother, but after a few minutes the action stiffened up quite a bit, now it only flicks out halfway.

So either the Tuff Glide is causing drag due the the tight tolerances of the blade and scales or it is not mixing well with the factory grease. Well I finally read the take down instruction and it notes that the grease is only applied in the holes in the two washers and the inner ring of the blade where it mates with the pivot, so no Tuff Glide "touch ups" necessary.

I have the takedown kit, but not the CRK grease, so I have to wait to order that before I can take it apart and clean everything.

Interestingly, the instructions don't call for lubing the ceramic ball, although it looks like there is already some grease on it from the factory. I'm gonna give them a call to verify.

I don't have an Umnum, but I do have a buncha Sebs. The only thing I use to lube 'em is CRK's grease. I do wipe everything down with a Tuff cloth when I have it d/a, but that's not the same as adding some actual lube.

The CRK grease and a lot of opening/closing will smooth out any Seb that I've ever gotten. I assume the same is true of the Umnum.

I just a umnumzaan ( slightly used ) I was and still am shocked on how smooth they are. Automatic like and mine is silent when opening !!! Scary !

Tuff glide is petroleum and 100% mineral spirits (not turpentine). When it dries it does form a dried (very thin) layer of oil. So it would not be surprising that it would create a tighter space in the already close tolerences. I would clean it out and just use the grease.

So, Whatcha find out?

spoke to Chris, he said the ceramic ball does not necessarily need lubing, but I should lube the "track" on the blade tang that the ball travels along.

Tuff Glide doesn't play well with grease, or coated blades.

The ceramic ball gets grease on it from the overflow of the washers.
I'm pretty carefull not to use too much grease in the first place, and I still see some on the ball later on.

I just wipe it off every now and then, it is a super smooth release dry or lubed.

I got mine out of storage yesterday after a year. I had used tuff glide on it before I put it up. Blade was super stiff. I took it and wash it with hot water and dish soap. Dried it off and lude it with reg. gun oil. Perfect now
