Hi,

Has anyone used tulipwood for knife handles? I think it's a rosewood. Does that mean it won't stabilize?

Thanks,

JD

Tulipwood works great for handles. And yes, it can be stabilized. I have a block of stabilized Tulipwood on my desk in front of me as I type this.

Here's what it looks like. This is fairly straight grained stuff. There is quarter sawn available that is really beautiful.

What does quarter sawn change in the appearance? (I'm unclear what quartersawn means...)

Thanks,

JD

Thought I had a photo of it, but it was Pink Ivory. Sorry.
The grain on quartersawn in not in parallel stripes, but the red is in layers, like flames. very striking.

I saved that pic.

Some of that handle design just has to go into a hunter design later.

Great looking work!

Joss, I dont know if it'll stablilize, but if it will it'd make a much more stable handle.

Mike that is an awsome fighter, just love those lines!

My friend, I'm glad these folks get to see your work.

For those who haven't had the pleasure of holding a Hull knife:
These are well-thought out, beautifully balanced and designed works of functional art. They are marvelously ground and the fit and finish is fantastic, as good as any I've seen. Mike sets a very high standard in his work and it is reflected in this foto. Every detail is attended to in one of Mike's knives, and much can be learned from simply studying one closely. The utter quality of his efforts grows on you the more you study the piece. He has inspired many of us with his efforts and his knowledge.

Thanks, Mike.

Thanks folks, for the compliments. Mike, I'll get the check out today.;) :D
Joss, sorry, I did not mean to hijack your thread.:)

Hey, I didn't know that Mike Hull guy actually made knives? Is that a Pakistan kit knife? :p :p :p

Great to see your work on here Mike...as I've mentioned before, there are some very high caliber makers that hang out here, but few realize it.

I'd like to ditto everything Mr. Fitzgerald just said above.

Hey Joss, I have some tulipwood that's been stabilized. I'll show you next time you're down. I have seen several different cuts down at Guilmer's in Portland, and while Tulipwood has some of the straightest grain you'll see in wood...the color and contrast is just flat gorgeous.

Thanks for Bill Cottrell for me having a piece of it ;)

Tulip wood is one of my favorite woods. The pic below is a Blades 'n' Stuff knife blade from Bob Engnath I finished up and put a handle on for my father.

The bolster is ebony and those check marks? Deer he has skined with this knife. There are allmost as many check marks on the other side as well. He has only needed to sharpen four times! Of course that's what happens when you let Paul Boss do the heat treating.;)

Forgot to mention this knife and another I made for my father, also from Bob, got me into making my own knives.

He, he... As if I needed yet one more excuse to come invade your shop...

Mr.Hull is a fine maker and good friend here as well.

Oh the pleasure of seeing you work first hand.

You the man!!!

P.S. No check needed bud:D
