I know a blacksmith here in the area that made a very large tumbler to tumble finish his ironwork. The main cylinder has probably a 20" diameter and I'd guess it's about 30" or more in length. He threw in a whole bunch of nuts, bolts, washers, and little scraps of steel as tumbling agents. It's a pretty simple, belt driven device but it does a great job and leaves a surprisingly clean and uniform finish.
I've actually thought about making one myself. Figure that if I can get my hands on an old cement mixer, I'll have a pretty good start.
Of course, if you're thinking about an entirely different kind of tumbler for an entirely different usage, then the above information is probably useless.
I get a way nicer finish on my bullets using a vibratory tumbler with steel balls, than other guys get using an actual mechanical tumbler. Unless you don't want it smooth?
old dryer + foam rubber + five gallon bucket = tumbler
Line the dryer drum with the rubbba, so the five gallon bucket is centered.
Bolt some light angle iron or 1x2 to the inside of the bucket, (3 should do) the length of the bucket, so's the lid will shut though. The angle irons make the media tumble instead of just slide around.
Pop in your favorite media, the work and set the timer on the dryer.
