Anyone doing any tuna fishing here? My bro is pretty serious about it and is bringing in fish upwards of 250 lbs. He was asking me for knives for these brutes. Any ideas?? I sent him after some moras and he grabbed the biggest he found on ebay- 8 1/2" and said it was small...

He saw some show with Suisin Maguro tuna knives...big suckers!! For only about $800! :grumpy:

Thanks all...

All the Deck Hands and Long Range Fisherman I know use either Forschner or Dexter Russel fillet knives. Personally I prefer Forschner.

I was in Plaza Cutlery the other day, and had just sharpened one of the local charter boat captains Forschner's.

I used my Forschner to fillet a nice Halibut I caught this morning.

The Suisin Maguro has a 21" blade. You might try to pick up a Rodent Waki from Swamp Rat on the exchange here in the next few weeks. It has a 17.5" blade but will probably cost about as much as the Suisin - maybe a couple of hundred dollars less - maybe...

They look like they have some big butchers knives...maybe that's what he needs...I sent him the links.

Thanks for all the ideas folks! The japanese blade does look more sword like to me too! he said in the program they were cutting up the tuna like lightning! I told him to buy the Waki...but then I would have to steal it! hah! He wasn't feeling the $400 either...much like my wife! ;)

It's a Oroshi hocho...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oroshi_hocho

You can get a a Kershaw Yanagiba sashimi knife for $40 delivered. Go to Amazon and do a search using the text below. This is a starter knife, but very serviceable for fishermen needing to process big fish.

i've gilled and gutted albacore and big eye tuna (and big yellowtails) with a buck 110, but that's about all you can do...to fillet and/or cut steaks, you do need a bigass blade like that yanagiba...

i think i could cut tuna steaks with a kershaw outcast though, might have to try that next time...
