Tungsten welding rod

Anyone here ever tried using a tungsten welding rod for TIG welding as a honing steel?
Seems like it could be a cheap alternative to those expensive smooth steels.
 
I have done it at work but my gripe with it was the electrodes were shorter than what I wanted. YMMV.
