Turkey, Pumpkin Pie and Push Daggers

So I'm sitting in my recliner with a belly full of turkey, enjoying a peaceful moment on BladeForums via my laptop. My wife cooked a fantastic Thanksgiving meal, my kids have smiles on their faces from ear-to-ear because of the pumpkin pie, and I've got an 18-ounce cup of Starbucks Morning Joe next to me on the end table. Life is good.

So let's talk about push daggers! :):)

All joking aside, I've been thinking about purchasing a Cold Steel Best Pal or Safe Keeper II/III for self-defense. I'm not looking for thoughts on self-defense or potential legal/courtroom ramifications. However, what I would like to know is how much utility these knives offer. Do any of you use a push dagger for utilitarian tasks, or do those of you who carry one do so strictly for self-defense? If so, what kind of tasks do you use it to perform, and how well does it perform those tasks?

Happy Thanksgiving,

The double edged ones suck. If you could find a single edge pusher you like thats better.
I have a safekeeperII..? I think. the double edged one, not flat ground. I hate it. Never use it, and I still haven't had dinner yet
Damn you... ;) happy thanksgiving amigo

Thanks for the reply, man. I have my eye on the Cold Steel Safe Keeper III for that very reason. It might be time to pull the trigger. I'll wait a little longer to see if anyone else weighs in.

i bought the III and II at the same time. sold the single edged III to a friend, regretted it and wished I had sold the II ever since.

I have a few of them , all Cold Steel but never have used them for anything. Used to carry them while jogging or working out, make sure you check your local law because I could easily see these being a felony depending upon where you live.

I have two of the the safekeeper II's, one made in Japan bought around 1995 AUS-8 and the other bought around 2005 made in China. The China version has a much better sheath (Secure X it says), does not wiggle around.

The other one I have is a terminator. I believe it was re-named the defender later but I may have that backwards. These are much nicer, polished well and I'm sure much harder to find; they have a tooled leather sheath and are a little shorter but definitely worth hanging onto if you can find one. That is the push blade used in the movie "Platoon" by Tom Berenger, the scene towards the end where he pulls it out and nicks Charlie Sheen's face.

Hope this helps, Happy Thanksgiving!

Let me know if you remember the model name. It sounds like a nice knife.

That is the model name, "Terminator" made by Cold Steel. The other model name is "Defender", also made by Cold Steel.

There may be slight differences in the two, I'm not quite sure. I believe they were made in the early 90's, maybe in the 80's as well.

Do a google search for both, may be helpful to you. There also is a review/comparison on youtube, I think it is the Cold Steel Defender model.
