I am really pleased to have several knives in the queue at RT's shop and am very seriously considering asking him to make a really nice balisong. I have never collected these type knives and don't really get quite as worked up about them. Nonetheless, I think I might should add one of his to the old collection. Any comments, advice on the whole butterfly knife as a collectible issue?

Hey Face,

While Ralph makes a great Balisong, I have sent several people to him that were looking for a custom Balisong.

It appears at this time the only Balisong market is for customized Balisongs from Benchmade. These were the ones selling for $400. Jody Sampson was doing a lot of the work on these.

Even this is a limited market. Like with most custom knives that have great "toy factor", once the Balisong was mass produced for the general public the sales of the higher priced Balisongs dropped.

That coupled with the fact that it finally became known to the western users that the Balisong is primarly a woman's purse knife.

Don't feel bad, I still have a couple different ones I play with from time to time!

Buy the balisong because you want it not for collectors value. Interesting statement about them being womens purse knives. I have a collection of muff pistols. Not often collected but i like them so i buy them. They
were small pistols carried in a muff. The furry thing they used to warm their hands with. ( I didn't name the things) Because they're not widely collected they're inexpensive and that's great.

The balisong is primarily a woman's purse knife? And westerners finally came to realize this?

News to me.

I would love to see some pictures of custom balisongs - you don't see them much and it would be quite interesting.

Muff pistols and womens balisongs - you never know what you will find here.
