So, I was straightening up the work bench earlier today. I had an open bottle of Ferric Chloride etchant on the bench along with my open Spyderco Nilakka. Like an idiot, I bumped the bottle of etchant and it spilled all over my table and on parts of the Nilakka blade. After rushing to the sink and rinsing it off and kicking myself for the next hour, I decided I had to do something to fix the ugly uneven etching spots all over the blade.

I ended up marking off parts of the blade I wanted to protect as well as added a Jackson Pollock type of design to the blade. It turned out better than I thought it would, definitely better than it was before. This is something I wouldn't have done if it wasn't for my earlier mishap.

What do you all think???

By the way, in case you're wondering, yes, those are custom scales I made.

That looks marvelous. One of the better patinas I have seen yet.

I just did a similar pattern on an inexpensive knife. What did you use to mask? Nail polish? Wax? Hot glue? Candle wax slung on the blade works well for me.

Looks good my man!

Looks awesome! Can't even imagine what kind of havoc the FeCl would have wrecked on the Nilakka's edge if it didn't have a resist on it.

I used some old nail polish on the blade and some blue painter's masking tape for the tang/pivot area.
