So... this might be a bad idea, a very, very, very bad idea, but I'm asking anyways. The only reason I'm asking is because I'm extremely bored, slightly dissatisfied with my knife, and I can't afford to get any new knives for a while. I've messed around with a few of my knives, and ruined one of them, because of this boredom (it was a cheap knife). My problem with the 51 is that it rusted heavily on me, and in removing the rust, and doing a whole bunch of other modifications to it, it removed the satin and is extremely susceptible to rust. I'm not happy with it, and have always just planned on replacing the blade with a coated one. However, I still have this blade, and like I said, I'm bored.
I'm basically thinking of removing one handle of my 51, cranking down on the tightness of the pivot, and loctiting it there. I could add a finger choil on the blade to allow you to keep it open, as there isn't much material to make a tang that your thumb would go on top of like most friction folders (although I could make a thumb ramp with the tang as well). It would pretty much be a two handed opener, as there's no option for a thumbstud. As you can see from any closed 51, the blade protrudes from the handle ever so slightly, which is a little dangerous. I could take off the tip and turn it into a wharncliffe/sheepsfoot blade, although this is risky as it gives me the chance to ruin it like my other knife. I have another bali that I like flipping better, so I'm not going to suffer, and I still could technically purchase another replacement blade and turn it into a 51 again. So basically.... is this a horribly stupid idea? Or is it worth the risk to maybe give me a unique, legal to carry friction folder with straight razor-like proportions?
