Turning a DCBB Busse to Satin?

Hey HOGs and Piglets,

Is this a doable task with some sand paper and elbow grease?

I've seen a few strippers that ended up Satin-ish. I just got a DCBB mentor so I want to give it the old college try. I would also like to do the same thing with my SAR 4. Should I etch the logo?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

DCBB is well finished so it would be fairly easy, especially compared to the stripped finish with many marks on it

As for the etching part....
I don't see that possible unless you apply some kind of stencil. Etching the way I do with a 9v battery needs the coating which is non-conductive. The factory logo is laser etched if I'm not mistaken.

Nice thread Chris!
I've wandered that about DCBB myself..
Same here. Depending on how smooth a person wants the satin finish, a coarser/finer grit could be used.

Regarding the logo, it could be taped to avoid excessive wear, and then either left as-is or carefully sanded to match the rest of the blade.

Are you worried about loosing the logo when you start sanding? If so, you may want to try some clear nail polish over it to protect it while sanding. That might work

I restored the satin finish on a LE SOB and the hardest part was keeping the sanding Mark's perfectly parallel to each other. I used wet sanding paper and WD40. Can't remember the grit but I think I may have posted it here. I'll take a look.

It's about halfway down this page.....

Very cool! 340 Grit Wet/Dry and WD40. Those are easy enough to find. Did you use a sanding block of any kind or just your hands? Also, did you put the knife in a vice?

Yes. That's the gist of it. I have a couple of strippers that don't show the logo anymore. It's not a huge deal but I really dig the old logo. I'm not taking much material off so it shouldn't be a problem but I would love it if I could etch it deeper somehow.

I guess since it's the difference in conductivity between the coating and the raw INFI in the logo that creates the etch, I would probably have to cover the area with electrical tape and just create a stencil using an exacto knife.

I will try to go with a combination of Cobalt and Gene's advice and cover it with clear nail polish and then lightly sand it at the end so it matches the rest of the blade.

Nope. Just used my finger to rub small squares of paper against the blade. I didnt secure the blade in a vice either. I just put down a piece of cardboard on my work bench, layed the blade flat against it and then tipped up the spine until the cutting edge was firmly touching the cardboard. Once the edge is touching you can't really cut yourself but you have to be super-duper careful to keep that edge pressed down. Lift it just a bit and you'll lose your fingerprints on your sanding finger in a hurry. Lol!
